Post-Match Report
Reactions: "The bench decided the match"
Jamie Gittens (in the mixed zone and to DAZN): "It is the first time that I've received the Man of the Match Award in the Champions League. It's a good feeling. I'm happy about my two goals. But it's even nicer to have won the match. When I came on as substitute, the coach said I should have an influence on the match. I've practised that move many times."
Sebastian Kehl (in the mixed zone): "It was very important to start with a victory. We were dominant in the first period but did not reward ourselves with goals, and performed significantly better in the second period. The coach found the right substitutions. That was the deciding factor. In the end, it was individual play that decided the match. We will take a few things away, positive and negative. The reaction from Jamie is that of a champion: We expect that the lads that come on change the game. When he is in the penalty area, he's almost impossible to defend against."
Julian Brandt (to DAZN): "It was dogged in the first period. We pushed a lot but gave away many counter-attacks and several good chances. It was a lot of work and a battle of attrition really. The spaces became larger towards the end as Brugge's energy dried up. What then sets us apart is that the bench scored the goals. We have a good squad across the board. The substitutes have decided the match once again. Sometimes you need a bit of patience in football."
Marcel Sabitzer (in the mixed zone): "We had problems with the opposition's switch play. We often did not defend well against it. In the end, it's the three points that count. Jamie came off the bench, scored two goals and secured the win for us."
Emre Can (to DAZN): "It was not a top performance but we'll take the victory. It was deserved in the end. The game was a bit sluggish and we didn't find solutions in the final third. The counter-pressing after losing possession was not good either. We have a strong squad and extremely good lads on the bench. Jamie (Gittens) helped us with his two goals and Serhou (Guirassy) was also present and held the ball up. Competition for places is good."
Pascal Groß (in the mixed zone): "It was a difficult match. They also had their moments. It was not as commanding as the final result. They got tired and we were able to take our chances. Jamie did a superb job, two great pieces of individual play. He is unbelievably strong in one on ones. He already won the game against Frankfurt for us with similar moves. For me personally, a dream has come true (editor's note: in reference to his debut in the Champions League). But I wasn't especially nervous. It was simply another difficult away match. We're still at the beginning of the season. The results are good. The most important thing is that we won."
