New York City inspired by fourth Street Soccer Times Square Cup

Saturday 11 October saw Borussia Dortmund and Street Soccer USA bring enthusiasm for the Black&Yellows to the United States and to Times Square in New York City for a fourth time. For 14 hours, the “Street Soccer Times Square Cup presented by BVB” transformed Duffy Square into a piece of Dortmund in the middle of Manhattan, representing once again the strength of BVB’s presence this side of the Atlantic.

In the morning, around 350 children from BVB CSR partner Street Soccer USA, a charitable organisation which offers new prospects to socially disadvantaged children, played across two pitches in the Youth Cup. In the afternoon, this was followed by the Corporate Cup, in which US influencers and, among others, employees of BVB partners (such as Rheinmetall) played alongside two BVB teams in a 4-v-4 format.

Among the participants was BVB legend Roman Weidenfeller, who in addition to playing represented the BVB colours in style alongside mascot EMMA. Throughout the day there was BVB content on three of the large billboards at Times Square: a strong indicator of the growing presence of Borussia Dortmund in the United States.

Marc Lingenhoff, managing director of BVB America, gave an overwhelmingly positive summary of the day: “The Street Soccer USA Times Square Cup stands for everything our club stands for - passion, community and opportunities. Bringing the spirit of Borussia Dortmund to the heart of New York City and giving hundreds of children the opportunity to play football in such an iconic location and to experience our values first-hand was very special. Although we are thousands of kilometres away from Germany, this event has become an integral part of our calendar, and will remain so in future.”

Special thanks go to our partners Ritter Sport, Coinbase, Rheinmetall, Polestar, Puma, Topps, Pluto TV and the DFL for helping to make this extraordinary event possible.

You can find more impressions of the event on Saturday on the BVB Instagram channels @bvb09 and @blackyellow.
