Facts on the home match against Leipzig

Since the Saxons were promoted to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2016, the only Bundesliga clubs to pick up more points than their total of 569 are Bayern Munich (721) and Borussia Dortmund (601). During this period, BVB finished as runners-up four times and Leipzig twice. Currently, both teams are in second and third place in the table, the closest challengers to Bayern. Here is the facts preview for Saturday’s top match (kick-off 15:30 CEST, live on Sky).

Scenario: Both teams go into the head-to-head clash on the back of four consecutive league wins. Dortmund are second with 13 points, Leipzig third with 12. 13 points after five matchdays is Borussia’s best haul in eight years. Across two seasons, BVB are unbeaten in 13 Bundesliga matches and have collected 35 points (11 wins, two draws) during this period – no other team have collected more points. Borussia’s last league defeat came on 15 March 2025 in an away match in Leipzig (2-0).

Home & away: Borussia were the second most successful home team last season with 11 wins, three draws and three defeats. They have won their last six matches at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK across two seasons, scoring at least three goals in all but one of those games. Leipzig won their last two away games (in Wolfsburg and Mainz, both 1-0 thanks to goals from Johan Bakayoko), having won only one of their previous 11 away games since the start of the year – also in Wolfsburg.

Record: The nine previous meetings between the two clubs at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK have produced 38 goals, an average of more than four per game. There has never been a 0-0 draw between the two teams, either in Dortmund or in Leipzig. Leipzig have only suffered more away defeats in Munich (seven) than in Dortmund (five).

Statistics: Borussia Dortmund have not conceded a goal in four Bundesliga matches and can now equal the club record. They have achieved five clean sheets in a row four times, most recently in 2017 under coach Peter Bosz. BVB have never managed five clean sheet victories in a row before. Since their 6-0 defeat in Munich on the first matchday of the Bundesliga season, Leipzig have conceded only one goal in four games. The Black & Yellows’ attack has needed an average of only five shots to score a goal, while the Saxons have scored on average every 12th attempt.

Last season: In front of 81,365 spectators at a sold-out SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, BVB dominated the game – but Leipzig scored the first goal. The visitors took the lead in the 27th minute with their first shot on goal through Sesko, but just three minutes later Beier equalised to make it 1-1. In the 65th minute, Guirassy turned the passionately contested match on its head when he scored to make it 2-1 for BVB.

Biggest home win: On 26 August 2018, BVB won 4–1, even though the visitors took the lead after just 31 seconds through Augustin. But goals from Mo Dahoud in the 21st minute, Marcel Sabitzer (then still with Leipzig) with an own goal (40th minute) and Axel Witsel (43rd minute) made it 3–1 at half-time. Marco Reus put the icing on the cake in injury time.

Ginter was always close to Guirassy, Jung moved out of the back line when Fabio Silva dropped deep, which the Dortmund player often did, receiving balls in the middle of the park. Borussia came forward mainly down the right wing, via the agile Couto.<\/p>\n<img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/2025/12/14/bl-spielbericht/14-Freiburg-1.jpg\" data-assetref=\"14-Freiburg-1-1765726138427\"><\/p>\nThe match & analysis: \n <\/b>From the very first minute on, the match was played at a high intensity. After just ten minutes, Couto and Manzambi saw yellow cards for a tussle on the touchline. There were also fiery scenes on the pitch: Guirassy headed a well-timed Fabio Silva cross just past the left post in the 9th minute, and shortly afterwards, Manzambi beat Can around the left hand corner of the six yard box, but he did not get enough behind his shot, meaning that Kobel could easily stop it on 9 minutes.<\/p>\nBorussia Dortmund had enjoyed 66 percent of the possession in the first 20 minutes \u2013 and also carved out the first big chance. After a one-two with Guirassy, Chukwuemeka took aim from an acute angle, but his shot hit the side netting in the 21st minute. Shortly afterwards, Can earned the chance to open the scoring as a result of some high pressing, which caused Freiburg to lose the ball in their half, but his shot from 17 metres was not accurate or powerful enough on 24 minutes. After exactly half an hour, the Black & Yellows were rewarded for their courageous performance: Couto struck a free kick from the right side into the box, Bensebaini chested the ball down and prodded it over the line to make it 1-0 in the 31st minute. Even though BVB was clearly in the driver\u2019s seat, Freiburg consistently looked dangerous on the counter, and shortly before the break, Günter had his side\u2019s third and best chance to score an equaliser, but the hosts\u2019 captain fired horribly wide in the 45th minute.<\/p>\n<img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/2025/12/14/bl-spielbericht/14-Freiburg-4.jpg\" data-assetref=\"14-Freiburg-4-1765726122396\"><\/p>\nEight minutes after the restart, Jobe Bellingham saw a red card. After a risky pass from Kobel, the Englishman tried to put his body in the way 19 metres out in front of his own goal, but caught Treu, who was bursting forward at pace, and was given his marching orders by referee Zwayer for preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity. It was Bellingham\u2019s first foul in the game. Günter fired the resulting free kick just past the left-hand post.<\/p>\nBVB responded to going a man down by bringing on Pascal Groß for Fabio Silva, and had hardly any extended periods of possession thereafter. The match took place almost entirely in the Dortmund half. Kobel brilliantly tipped a follow-up shot from Treu around the post in the 69th minute, and also showed strong reactions to save Suzuki\u2019s shot, which had taken a wicked deflection off Bensebaini, in the 74th minute. But 60 seconds later, Freiburg were celebrating the equaliser Höler did well to get on the end of Günter\u2019s cross and finished brilliantly, finding the far post.
