Kovac's Tactical Genius & Super Sub Magic: a Lethal Combination

In it's 2-2 draw with host Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund surprised just about everyone by fielding a back four and playing in a 4-4-2 formation for the first time since the early days under iconic former Head Coach Jürgen Klopp. However, the Black & Yellow's successful trip to Munich also had a lot to do with the super subs coming through once again.

Borussia Dortmund remains undefeated this Bundesliga season as well as tied on points with FC Bayern München. At this point last year, the Black & Yellow were already trailing the German record champions by seven points.

Serhou Guirassy buried his first shot of the match, receiving the ball from Carney Chukwuemeka and scoring in the 60th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Guirassy's statistical likelihood of finding the net from such a tight angle was only 11.5 percent. However, the striker managed to pick out the small gap between Jonas Urbig’s fingertips and the post from exactly 11.5 meters (roughly 12.6 yards) out.

After Dayot Upamecano’s headed goal, the Black & Yellow found themselves trailing 2-1 in the closing stages, but they once again showed their resilience. Seven of BVB's 14 goals this season have come after the 80th minute of matches. Fabio Silva blasted the ball into the back of the net at a speed of 90.6 km/h (roughly 56.3 mph). Having only scored twice during the entirety of the 2025-26 Bundesliga campaign, the Portuguese attacker has already bagged three netters through matchday 8 of this season.

Two substitutes combined for the goal that leveled the score at 2-2, with Konstantinos Karetsas providing the assist. BVB leads the German topflight with 13 attacking points (5 goals & 8 assists) chipped in by players off the bench. In fact, that total has set a new Bundesliga record through eight matchdays.
