Germany's World Cup is over – Defeat in a penalty shootout against Paraguay

The FIFA World Cup is over for the German team. In the round of 32, Germany lost 3-4 on penalties to Paraguay in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Two Borussia players were in the lineup.

In their first match of the knockout stage against Paraguay, the German national team found themselves down 0-1 in the 42nd minute. Shortly before halftime, Felix Nmecha, who had started the match, missed a golden opportunity to equalize when he found himself unmarked. His deflected shot went wide of the left post. It was the Borussia Dortmund player’s last involvement in the match; he was substituted after the break.

Although Germany managed to tie the game in the 54th minute, no further goals were scored in regulation time, so the match went into extra time. In the 102nd minute, Germany took what appeared to be a 2-1 lead, but the referees ruled that Waldemar Anton had fouled the goalkeeper beforehand, so the goal was disallowed. The Borussia player had come on as a substitute in the 79th minute. Anton missed the chance to score the winner shortly before the end of extra time when his header from five yards out went straight at the opposing goalkeeper (119).
