65th birthday: UEFA President Ceferin pays tribute to Hans-Joachim Watzke

On the occasion of Hans-Joachim Watzke's 65th birthday, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin paid tribute to Borussia Dortmund's CEO. Under the title "Humility and pride", Ceferin not only outlined the Borussia official's successful work but also his friendship with Hans-Joachim Watzke, who has been a member of the UEFA Executive Committee since April 2023. The tribute in full:

In the amazing world of football – in which passion reigns supreme and some victories are forever engraved in the hearts of fans – one man has humbly and proudly established himself as a cornerstone of integrity, vision and boundless dedication. Hans-Joachim Watzke's journey with Borussia Dortmund is not simply a career, but rather a lifelong bond with his childhood favourite club, which has risen to become a true great of world football under his leadership.

Aki's management style uniquely combines the dedication of a true fan with the instincts of a capable executive. Thanks to this unmistakeable style, he has won the respect and trust of all those associated with the club and German football since the mid-1990s. Today, more than a quarter of a century later, he can look back with pride on numerous titles with Dortmund and the remarkable conveyor belt of great football stars that this legendary club has produced.

Borussia Dortmund are an outstanding example of community cohesion. And believe me, that is worth more than all money in the world or trophies. I'll never forget my first match at the stadium in Dortmund – the unconditional devotion and positive energy that was noticeably transferred from the stands to the pitch. I asked Aki if it felt the same following a defeat? "Our fans would never turn their backs on the team," he told me. And added with a twinkle in his eye: "But just to be on the safe side, I put a week's supply of food in my fridge before every matchday."

Aki shows leadership in times of triumph and is incredibly resilient when the going gets tough – that's what sets him apart. He stood unwaveringly on the right side of history when European football loudly said no to the privatisation attempts of a small group of wealthy individuals. He still does so, with the same dedication and determination as on day one.

I can proudly say that my friendship with Aki extends beyond the boundaries of sport. It has been forged by the flames of passion for football and mutual respect, and strengthened by the common challenges and wonderful experiences we have shared over the years. Aki's experience and contribution to UEFA and his involvement in the development of European football are invaluable. We're delighted to have him as a member of our Executive Committee.

Dear Aki, many thanks for your immeasurable love for football. Your legacy is already inspiring, but your work is not yet done. European football is counting on you. I wish you many more productive years.

Happy birthday, my friend!
