Daniel Svensson
Daniel Svensson has been at Borussia Dortmund since February 2025. He initially joined the club on loan before signing a permanent contract until 30 June 2029 in mid-May of the same year. “Daniel has fully met our expectations from day one,” emphasised sporting director Sebastian Kehl: “He settled in quickly and has immediately enriched our team with his performances. His intensity and flexibility fit very well with our style of play and give us a lot of options. On top of that, Daniel is also a good guy and an exemplary professional. It was therefore logical for us to sign him on a permanent basis.” The Swede explained: “After being called up to the Swedish national team, moving to a top European club like Borussia Dortmund was another great step in my career. Since I’ve been here, it feels like home. I really enjoy being here. I’m very happy that I’ve now signed and will be staying.”
The fact that Svensson pushed himself to his limits in his starting debut in the Black & Yellow jersey fits in with his image as a model professional. Still fresh from the long winter break in Denmark and weeks without playing practice, the new signing from FC Nordsjaelland felt the effects of the high tempo in the first leg of the Uefa Champions League play-off against Benfica (3-0) in mid-February. His muscle cramp shortly before the final whistle earned him a joking remark from BVB captain Emre Can: “What’s up, boss? I thought you were fit.” This anecdote from the Portuguese capital is still smiled about today. Because there is certainly no question of Svensson lacking fitness. On the contrary, the Stockholm-born Swedish international, who has become a regular at BVB and was described as a “machine” by his former teammate Jeppe Tverskov, is one of the hardest-working players in almost every game.
On Matchday 30 of the 2024/25 season against Mönchengladbach, Daniel Svensson scored his first Bundesliga goal with a header, and on Matchday 31 in the game against TSG Hoffenheim, he set up two goals with passes to Serhou Guirassy and Julian Brandt. “It’s a different level here. But I feel like I’ve settled in quickly.” I just try to play my game with confidence. Overall, it’s gone really well for me,” he said of his first six months in the Bundesliga. “I think the fans like the way I play football – the way I fight for the team. They seem happy for me and I’m also happy that they support me in every game. So everything is good.”
Born on 12 February 2002 in Stockholm, Svensson began playing football northwest of the Swedish capital in the youth ranks of Irsta IF. After a spell at Skiljebo SK, the 1.83-metre-tall defender moved to IF Brommapojkarna at the age of 12, where he made his professional debut in 2020.
After six appearances in the Swedish first division, Svensson left the club and moved to Danish top-tier side FC Nordsjælland. In the neighbouring country, Svensson initially started for the U19s before making his debut for the senior team in November 2020, which he crowned with an assist.
The Swede made a total of 153 appearances for Nordsjaelland, scoring eight goals and providing 20 assists. The full-back also took part in the UEFA Conference League with the Danes, gaining his first taste of international competition.
Daniel Svensson progressed through all the Swedish junior national teams from the U16s to the U21s and made his debut for his country’s senior national team on 14 October 2024 in the last minute of the UEFA Nations League C match against Estonia (a 3-0 win), having been called up for the first time in June of the same year. He played his first full 90-minute game on 10 June 2025 in a 4-3 win against Algeria.
