Borussia Dortmund and Dynamo Kyiv played a charity match in front of 35,000 spectators at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on Tuesday evening. The clash between the eight-time German champions and 16-time Ukrainian title-winners ended 3-2 (3-1) to the visitors.

BVB were unfortunately without many of their recognised players, with Kobel, Meunier, Hummels, Bellingham, Witsel, Wolf, Brandt, Dahoud, Reyna, Malen, Hazard, Morey, Schmelzer and Tigges all unavailable to play. But they opened the scoring with their first attack. Reus played the ball out to the left flank towards Haaland, who sprinted into the box and squared the ball into the path of Bynoe-Gittens, who slotted into the bottom right corner (4).

Dynamo Kyiv – the record champions with 16 championships in Ukraine and 13 Soviet titles before that – lined up with 11 current internationals. The country is set to play its first World Cup 2022 qualification play-off against Scotland on 1 June and if they win, they will compete with Wales for the final berth in Qatar three days later. They therefore approached this game seriously and levelled only five minutes later when Buyalskyi curled home a glorious effort from a centre-left position to make it 1-1. Hitz stood rooted to the spot as the perfectly struck shoot flew past him. The goalscorer turned provider barely 120 seconds later when he played in Vanat, who used his strength to hold off Simic before firing home from close range to make it 2-1. The high-scoring start to the game almost continued in the 17th minute, when Pongracic brought down Dovbyk in the box. But Hitz was on hand to save the resultant penalty from Shaparenko.

With both teams quickly bypassing the midfield, it proved to be an entertaining friendly for the spectators in attendance – among them many enthusiastic and loud onlookers from Ukraine. Pherai's shot narrowly missed the visitors' goal in the 32nd minute, before Shepelev struck the upright at the other end two mintues later. Vanat then increased the two-time European champions' lead to 3-1 with a shot from a centre-right position.

The match continued in the same lively fashion after the interval. The Dynamo goalkeeper Bushchan first saved a well-placed and powerful penalty from Reinier, showing lightning reactions to get down to the bottom right corner from the shooter's perspective (54). Then Moukoko's shot on the turn was kept out by another quick-reaction save from the shot-stopper (56). Rothe reduced the deficit to 3-2 when he guided home Gürpüz's cross following a shortly taken corner, although there was a suspicion of offside. Moukoko (66) and Rothe (69) had chances to level the scores, while at the other end Unbehaun made an outstanding double stop to stop the two-goal deficit from being re-established.
