Emma Olsson joins women's handball team

Swedish international Emma Olsson joins from Icelandic Cup winner Fram Reykjavík for the coming season and will strengthen the Borussia Dortmund women's handball team on the circle and in the defensive inside block. The 24-year-old has signed a one-year contract with an option for another year.

The seventh new addition to the women's handball team for the 2022/23 season is a done deal. BVB head coach André Fuhr has found another reinforcement in the far north for the circle and the inside block in defence. Emma Olsson from leading Icelandic club Fram Reykjavík will strengthen the reigning German champions in the coming season at the circle position and in central defence. The 24-year-old Swedish international has signed a one-year contract with an option for another year. "We are in the process of putting together the right team for the future. Emma Olsson is another building block in our concept," explained Handball Department Manager Andreas Heiermann.

"We were looking for a physically strong player for the circle who can also play a very important role in the inside block. And Emma Olsson fulfils this requirement profile," said André Fuhr. "She has a strong physical game presence, is robust, defends very compactly, is good at receiving the ball and has an especially strong one-on-one game," said BVB coach Fuhr, who prepared the transfer together with his assistant Andreas Kuno: "We scouted and searched for a long time in Europe. We know that Emma is young and has a lot of potential."

Emma Olsson proved during her time in Reykjavík that she can play both inside block and in the circle. After moving to Iceland from Swedish club Önnered HK Gothenburg last year, she won the cup with Fram Reykjavík. Before that, she had played for Eslövs IK for a long time. "I like exploring new places and have tried to experience as much of Iceland as possible over the past year. Now it's Germany's turn, which I'm really looking forward to," Olsson said.

Emma Olsson is the seventh new signing for the 2022/23 season, with BVB previously presenting Harma van Kreij (Lubljana), Lena Hausherr (Zwickau), Zoë Sprengers (Bayer Leverkusen), Lisa Antl, Meret Ossenkopp (both Buxtehuder SV) and Anastasiya Sivukha (Victoria-Berestie) to strengthen the squad. Last week, BVB confirmed that Dutch player Tessa van Zijl will leave the club and join Spanish club CB Elche.
