Lukasz Piszczek: "I still want to achieve something"

Lukasz Piszczek made his 250th Bundesliga appearance for the Black & Yellows against Düsseldorf – a tally that is set to grow after he signed a contract extension to 2021. In an interview with kicker magazine, the defender explained why he does not want a farewell match and why he never thought about leaving Borussia Dortmund in the past.

"I'm not mentally burnt-out. I'm still hungry and I still want to achieve something," said Lukasz Piszczek when asked about his one-year contract extension. The 35-year-old moved to the Ruhr region from Berlin in 2010 and has since become an institution on the right side of defence. "I like stability in my life. It was a difficult step on a personal level to leave Hertha in 2010. I simply had to go to Dortmund. And why should I leave BVB? I'm already at a big club. A lot would have needed to happen for me to leave Dortmund. I've been given playing time under all the coaches and so – unlike Kuba Blaszczykowski – I never needed to consider a transfer. I was lucky in that sense," Piszczek explained.

But his time in Dortmund will conclude at the end of next season. The Borussia stalwart does not want a farewell match: "I'm in two minds about that. Matches like that are great – it's just that I don't like being the centre of attention. My farewell to the national team last year was very emotional, but that's enough. I don't need that a second time."

After hanging up his boots, Piszczek will return to Poland. Once there, he wants to play alongside friends for his hometown club LKS Goszalkowice and take charge of its youth academy. (cr)
