U23s beat Budapest ahead of return to competitive action

Borussia Dortmund's U23 have beaten Hungarian second division side MTK Budapest 6-0 after three 45-minute sessions of play. The goals were scored by Moritz Broschinski (2), Prince Aning, Falko Michel, Mario Suver and Timo Bornemann.

In his side's only friendly ahead of their return to competitive action, BVB coach Christian Preußer lined up his team with a back-three. The U23s bossed possession over the course of the game against the hard-tackling Hungarian side. After about an hour, Franz Pfanne had to be replaced after picking up a knock, and Nnamdi Collins replaced him.

About a quarter of an hour before the end of the second period of play, both teams made 11 changes, and BVB went on to turn their dominance into goals. Moritz Broschinski scored from the spot to put the Black and Yellows 1-0 up on 75th minutes – less than two minutes after coming on – before Prince Aning managed to latch on to a beautiful pass from Falko Michel to double the lead on 83 minutes. In the final 45-minute period of play, Falko Michel scored after 94 minutes, Mario Suver scored from a corner on 100 minutes, and Broschinski fired home on 113 minutes, before substitute Timo Bornemann scored on 130 minutes – just 10 minutes after coming on.

Christian Preußer was satisfied with the match and the final result before the return to competitive action in the away game against SpVgg. Bayreuth on Sunday 15 January.

That\u2019s why we\u2019ve made the rosters a bit broader and more balanced this year. When it comes to player flow, we\u2019re well on our way to reaching the numbers I envision.<\/p>\nIn addition, we\u2019ve further expanded the rosters with a few new external signings so that, during this phase with so many competitions, we don\u2019t end up short-handed again and have to make certain players play through periods when they\u2019d actually be better off taking a break.\u201d<\/p>\n\u2026 the importance of international competitions for the U19s: \n<\/b>\u201cWe were the youngest team in the Youth League, the Youth League, and the Premier League International Cup. In the winter, we made a conscious decision to move players like Samuele Inacio, Luca Reggiani, and Mathis Albert up to the U23s or the first-team squad early on. That has an impact on the team during the winter. It means the team has to find its footing again. New players get a chance, but at the same time, they face the challenge of stepping into the shoes of the already established youth players.<\/p>\nThat was the phase in which the U19 team certainly faced the greatest difficulties\u2014both in terms of results and performance. But we can say: We made it.
