Having made five top-flight appearances in his native Argentina, defensive prodigy Leonardo Balerdi joined the Borussia Dortmund first-team squad in January 2019. He did not play for Lucien Favre's side in the 2018/19 season, though he made the matchday squad three times in the UEFA Champions League and Bundesliga. "The signing of Leonardo Balerdi is a transfer for the future that was originally planned for the coming summer but has now been brought forward. Leonardo is an intelligent centre-back who is strong with his head and in one-on-ones. He's also good at build-up play and passing. We're very glad that he's chosen us and are convinced he'll help us with his talent in the future," said sporting director Michael Zorc in January 2019.
The Argentina U20 international is regarded as one of the most talented defenders in South America. In addition to the three times he was included in the senior matchday squad, he made four appearances for the U23s in the Regionalliga in the second half of the 2018/19 season.
His first club as a child was Sportivo Pueyrredón. Balerdi then joined Boca Juniors at the age of 14 and made his debut for the capital club in the Primera División on 27 August 2018. After moving to Germany, the 1.91m-tall-man's bow in Black & Yellow came for the U23s against 1. FC Cologne II in the Regionalliga West on 1 April 2019. Five days later, the defender scored his first goal against TV Herkenrath. He was also part of the Argentina squad that took part in the U20 South American Championship in Chile in January 2019.
