Borussia Dortmund celebrate 116th anniversary

The history of Borussia Dortmund began on 19 December 1909. In the ‘Zum Wildschütz’ inn on Dortmund’s Borsigplatz, 18 Borussia fans founded our club and paved the way for a history steeped in tradition. Today, with more than 230,000 members, we are celebrating BVB’s 116th anniversary.

On the fourth Sunday of Advent in 1909, 18 members of the Catholic Trinity Parish Youth Association got together to start a football club. After that evening at Borsigplatz, it was another 392 days before BVB played their first match against VfB Dortmund on 15 January 1911.

Today, Borussia Dortmund are one of the largest sports clubs in the world and can look back on 116 years of success. The club stands for community, passion and tradition. In addition to football, other sports such as handball, table tennis and integration sports are also played under the Black & Yellow banner. Borussia Dortmund have always stood up for the people of the region and promoted social projects.

For 116 years, Borussia Dortmund have been inspiring people in their home region and now far beyond. On today's birthday, we not only look back on sporting successes, but also celebrate a community that stands together.
