The facts on the match away to Sporting

Borussia Dortmund will face Sporting CP in Lisbon on Tuesday (kick-off 21:00 CET, live on Prime) in the first leg of their play-off tie. BVB have always prevailed in knockout ties with opponents from Portugal.

Scenario: While BVB narrowly missed out on direct qualification for the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League by one point, finishing in tenth place in the league phase, Sporting secured the penultimate ticket for the knockout matches with a 1-1 draw against Bologna in twenty-third place. The Portuguese side had made an extremely strong start to the competition, picking up ten points from their first four games.

This season: Borussia Dortmund won five of their eight games in the league phase (3-0 in Bruges, 7-1 against Celtic, 1-0 against Graz, 3-0 in Zagreb and 3-1 against Shakhtar Donetsk). Defeats came away to Real Madrid (5-2), at home to Barcelona (3-2) and away to Bologna (2-1). Sporting started with a 2-0 win against Lille, a 1-1 draw in Eindhoven, a 2-0 win in Graz and an emphatic statement in the form of a 4-1 victory over Manchester City. This was followed by four games without a win: a 5-1 loss at the hands of Arsenal, a 2-1 loss in Bruges, a 2-1 loss in Leipzig and, most recently, a 1-1 draw against Bologna.

Head-to-head record: Borussia have played 14 of their 308 European matches to date against teams from Portugal. This has resulted in nine wins and five defeats. There has not yet been a draw. BVB have always prevailed in knockout matches: in 1963 and 2017 against Benfica and 2016 against FC Porto. The Black & Yellows have met Sporting twice in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. On 18 October 2016, BVB won 2-1 at the Estádio José Alvalade XXI after goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Julian Weigl. Two weeks later, Adrian Ramos netted for a 1-0 home win. On 28 September 2021, a goal from Donyell Malen was also enough to secure a 1-0 win. Borussia lost the second fixture 3-1 and were thereby eliminated from the competition.

Borussia facts: BVB have two of the four away matches in this Champions League season: in Bruges (3-0) and in Zagreb (3-0). Last season, the Black & Yellows also won in Newcastle (1-0), Milan (3-1) and Paris (1-0), giving them a positive record in their last ten Champions League away games (five wins, one draw, four defeats). BVB have won twice on their previous visits to Portugal, both in 2016: first 1-0 in the Europa League away to FC Porto in February and then the aforementioned 2-1 win at Sporting in October.

Sporting facts: After Barcelona, Sporting CP are the second most successful sports club in Europe in terms of titles and trophies won across all the sports they play. Champions 20 times in football, cup winners 17 times and winners of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1964, the club have played 31 matches against teams from Germany, winning only four of them. Six games ended in draws and 21 have been lost. Sporting have never beaten a German opponent in a knockout round.

Europe's elite: This is Sporting's eleventh appearance in the UEFA Champions League. Their best performances has been reaching the round of 16 twice: first in 2008/09, when they lost 5-0 and then 7-1 to Bayern Munich; again in 2021/22, when they faced Manchester City, losing 5-0 in the first leg and then drawing 0-0 in the second. BVB are appearing in the competition for the ninth time in a row and the 19th time overall (only 09 clubs have been there more often), reaching the knockout round in nine of their last 11 appearances and the final three times (winners in 1997, finalists in 2013 and 2024).

Maximilian Beier returned to the bench. Emre Can, Julian Ryerson, Carney Chukwuemeka and Serhou Guirassy joined the team. <\/p>\nTactics:  <\/b>As in the Champions League, BVB started with two strikers (Fabio Silva alongside Guirassy) and a number 10, with Chukwuemeka primarily operating from the inside-left. In the four-strong midfield line behind them, Ryerson moved to the left side. Freiburg also met Dortmund's 3-4-1-2 with a back three or back five. Both attacked high and the two sides gave each other hardly any air to breathe in the first 30 minutes. Ginter was always close to Guirassy, Jung moved out of the back line when Fabio Silva dropped deep, which the Dortmund player often did, receiving balls in the middle of the park. Borussia came forward mainly down the right wing, via the agile Couto.<\/p>\n<img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/2025/12/14/bl-spielbericht/14-Freiburg-1.jpg\" data-assetref=\"14-Freiburg-1-1765726138427\"><\/p>\nThe match & analysis: \n <\/b>From the very first minute on, the match was played at a high intensity. After just ten minutes, Couto and Manzambi saw yellow cards for a tussle on the touchline. There were also fiery scenes on the pitch: Guirassy headed a well-timed Fabio Silva cross just past the left post in the 9th minute, and shortly afterwards, Manzambi beat Can around the left hand corner of the six yard box, but he did not get enough behind his shot, meaning that Kobel could easily stop it on 9 minutes.<\/p>\nBorussia Dortmund had enjoyed 66 percent of the possession in the first 20 minutes \u2013 and also carved out the first big chance. After a one-two with Guirassy, Chukwuemeka took aim from an acute angle, but his shot hit the side netting in the 21st minute. Shortly afterwards, Can earned the chance to open the scoring as a result of some high pressing, which caused Freiburg to lose the ball in their half, but his shot from 17 metres was not accurate or powerful enough on 24 minutes. After exactly half an hour, the Black & Yellows were rewarded for their courageous performance: Couto struck a free kick from the right side into the box, Bensebaini chested the ball down and prodded it over the line to make it 1-0 in the 31st minute. Even though BVB was clearly in the driver\u2019s seat, Freiburg consistently looked dangerous on the counter, and shortly before the break, Günter had his side\u2019s third and best chance to score an equaliser, but the hosts\u2019 captain fired horribly wide in the 45th minute.<\/p>\n<img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/2025/12/14/bl-spielbericht/14-Freiburg-4.jpg\" data-assetref=\"14-Freiburg-4-1765726122396\"><\/p>\nEight minutes after the restart, Jobe Bellingham saw a red card. After a risky pass from Kobel, the Englishman tried to put his body in the way 19 metres out in front of his own goal, but caught Treu, who was bursting forward at pace, and was given his marching orders by referee Zwayer for preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity. It was Bellingham\u2019s first foul in the game. Günter fired the resulting free kick just past the left-hand post.<\/p>\nBVB responded to going a man down by bringing on Pascal Groß for Fabio Silva, and had hardly any extended periods of possession thereafter. The match took place almost entirely in the Dortmund half. Kobel brilliantly tipped a follow-up shot from Treu around the post in the 69th minute, and also showed strong reactions to save Suzuki\u2019s shot, which had taken a wicked deflection off Bensebaini, in the 74th minute. But 60 seconds later, Freiburg were celebrating the equaliser Höler did well to get on the end of Günter\u2019s cross and finished brilliantly, finding the far post. Freiburg had 11 shots to BVB\u2019s 0 after the red card and thought they'd made it 2-1, but Matanovic\u2019s goal did not count as he was ruled offside on 86 minutes.<\/p>\nOutlook:<\/b>   \nIn the last game of 2025, Borussia Dortmund will face Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday (kick-off: 20:30 CET).
