Borussia Dortmund among 'Europe's Climate Leaders 2025"

Borussia Dortmund have been included in the prestigious ‘Europe's Climate Leaders’ list for the first time. BVB are the only European professional football club included in this year's annual ranking by the Financial Times and Statista.

The list for 2025 includes a total of 600 companies, compiled from a longlist of around 2,000 companies. The survey focuses on European companies that have achieved the greatest reduction in their Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity over a period of five years (between 2018 and 2023 for this edition). To be included in the list, companies must meet an important threshold: their core emissions intensity must have reduced by more than 3% annually.

Borussia Dortmund have met this through their long-standing commitment to climate protection and the wide range of measures they have implemented in line with their environmental responsibilities. The focus is primarily on increasing energy efficiency and continuously reducing emissions as part of BVB's individual decarbonisation strategy. This includes the current installation of the largest PV system on a stadium roof in Germany in collaboration with sustainability partner RWE.

More information on responsibility and sustainability at BVB can be found here.

Background

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions originate from a company's own operations or from the energy it uses. Emission intensity is defined as Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per €1 million of revenue.
