Across the big pond: From BVB to the USA – from the USA to BVB

Through the years, many former Borussia Dortmund players have built connections with the USA, either through their career or their background. We introduce these players here.

Marco Reus is a Dortmunder born and bred, and was the face of Borussia Dortmund for over a decade. After an impressive career at BVB, which included winning the DFB Cup and reaching the Champions League final twice, Reus transferred to Major League Soccer (MLS) team LA Galaxy in 2024. In his first season there he celebrated winning the MLS Cup, which was his first championship title as a professional player.

Roman Bürki, the Swiss goalkeeper, guarded the Borussia goal from 2015-2022. After his time at BVB he transferred to St. Louis City in the USA, where he became the first captain of the club and MLS “Goalkeeper of the Year”. Bürki won the DFB Cup twice with Borussia Dortmund and continued his successful career in the MLS.

Christian Pulisic, the US national player, was trained at Borussia Dortmund and played for the first team from 2016-2019. After transferring to Premier League team FC Chelsea, and then to Serie A team AC Milan, Pulisic continued his impressive record when it came to scoring goals. At Chelsea he won the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup in 2021. Pulisic has been playing for the US national team since 2016, and in 2018 he became the youngest player to be made captain in the association’s history.

Jovan Kirovski, the US football functionary, was at Borussia Dortmund from 1996 to 2000. Although he primarily played as a substitute for BVB, he was part of the squad that won the UEFA Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup in 1997. Following the end of his active career, Kirovski became co-coach at LA Galaxy, and since 2024 he has been technical director at Milan Futuro, the second team of AC Milan.
