Kjell Wätjen joins VfL Bochum on loan

Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund are set to loan their talented midfielder Kjell Wätjen, 19, to relegated Bundesliga team VfL Bochum for the 2025/26 season.

Wätjen, who has just represented the Germany national team at the U19 European Championships and was part of the squad that suffered an extra-time semi-final defeat to Spain, will gain as much game time as possible at Castroper Straße. A purchase option has expressly not been agreed.

BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl explained: “We've made a conscious decision to loan Kjell to VfL Bochum – a very ambitious second-division club where he can get a lot of playing time. Due to the competitive situation in our midfield, that would have been difficult for Kjell at BVB in 2025/2026. Nonetheless, we continue to believe in him, will keep a close eye on his performances for our neighbours and wish Kjell the greatest possible success.”
