BVB Women Celebrate Victory Over Rhenania Bottrop

It was a one-sided affair against the team promoted from the Niederrheinliga: On Matchday 8 of the Regionalliga West, the Borussia Dortmund women’s soccer team defeated the bottom-ranked team from Bottrop 11–0! Alex Popp and Ramona Maier each scored a hat trick. Since their closest rivals from Gelsenkirchen and Leverkusen failed to win on Sunday, the Black and Yellows were able to further extend their lead at the top of the table.

Lineup

Compared to the previous week (a 5-0 away win at DJK Südwest Köln), coach Markus Högner made four changes to the starting lineup: Jenske Steenwijk, Ricarda Walkling, Ann-Sophie Vogel, and Melanie Schuster replaced Rita Schumacher, Sara Ito, Frederike Kempe, and Jacqueline Meißner.

Match Summary

The visitors from Bottrop recorded the first shot on goal of the match as early as the second minute, courtesy of Sandra Ehrhardt. Immediately afterward, the league-leading Dortmund team turned their attention toward the opponent’s goal and created chances from set pieces. The first goal of the day, however, came from open play: Ramona Maier broke through on the left flank and set up Jenske Steenwijk perfectly, who only had to tap the ball in from a few meters out (10th minute). The 2-0 goal also came down the wing, this time on the opposite side. Alex Popp powered home a header off a cross from Lena Ostermeier (15th minute).

Against the increasingly passive visitors from Bottrop, Markus Högner’s team left no doubt that they intended to settle the match early. Thanks to back-to-back goals by Alex Popp (27th minute) and Ramona Maier (28th minute), as well as another header by the Dortmund captain (39th minute), the 3,034 fans at Rote Erde Stadium celebrated a well-earned 5–0 halftime lead.

At the start of the second half, there were neither personnel changes nor any shift in the flow of the game. It took only a few minutes for Lara Schmidt and Annika Enderle to extend the lead to 7–0. Just shy of the one-hour mark, Markus Högner brought on a fresh trio: Rita Schumacher, Jacqueline Meißner, and Frederike Kempe. BVB continued to apply pressure but saw the frequency of scoring chances drop slightly.

That would change again in the final quarter-hour: In the 78th minute, Jenske Steenwijk scored her second goal of the match following an assist from Ann-Sophie Vogel. Steenwijk, together with Ronja Leubner, set up Ramona Maier’s goal to make it 9–0. The question of whether a double-digit score would be celebrated that afternoon was answered shortly before the final whistle by Ramona Maier and Rita Schumacher, who scored the 10–0 and 11–0 goals, thereby capping off a flawless team performance.
