Kovac Calls Players to Account Ahead of Away Game in Berlin

Ahead of Saturday afternoon’s Bundesliga away game at 1. FC Union Berlin (17 Oct., 3:30 p.m.,), BVB head coach Niko Kovac addressed the most pressing personnel issues in his squad.

Borussia Dortmund’s head coach had positive news to share before the team’s departure for Berlin: “Everyone is in good shape! Nico Schlotterbeck is back, so we have a full roster to draw from,” said Niko Kovac at the press conference on Friday afternoon.

In terms of BVB’s current roster situation, this means that all first-team players are available for the away match against 1. FC Union Berlin, with the exception of the three long-term injured players: Emre Can, Giannis Konstantelias (both with torn cruciate ligaments), and Justin Lerma (muscle injury).

Niko Kovac is pleased with the squad situation ahead of the away game at Stadion An der Alten Försterei in Berlin-Köpenick, but at the same time holds his full squad accountable: “Every single player who’s here has the right to play.”

One day after his 55th birthday, the Berlin native is confident ahead of his return to his hometown that his players can build on their previous away performances in the Bundesliga against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (3–2) and VfB Stuttgart (1–0): “For the game in Berlin, we’ll take a close look at who has recovered well, is fresh, and is ready to take on the challenge. Whoever is ready to take that on will also have a good chance of playing tomorrow.” (myr)
