Karetsas’ Ankle Cause for Widespread Concern

Five minutes after coming on as a substitute in the Bundesliga away match at 1. FC Union Berlin (0-0), Konstantinos Karetsas suffered an ankle injury. Team officials hope the 18-year-old's injury is not too serious.

When the Greece international came on in the 62nd minute, he added a noticable spark to his side's play. While four of Karetsas' six passes found teammates, the teenager also showed impressive grit, proving nearly impossible to beat in battles for the ball. He won four of his five duels, including dispossessing Rani Khedira just outside the Union penalty area in the 67th minute, only to go down injured during the second part of the play. Karetsas' foot got caught in the grass as the young attacker drove to the end line and fought to prevent the opposing team's captain from winning the ball back.

“He twisted his ankle," said Managing Director for Sport Lars Ricken. "Something's not quite right with it. We’ll have to do further testing to determine how serious the injury is." While the final diagnosis is pending, Ricken called the problem “at least serious enough that he couldn’t keep playing.” Sporting Director Ole Book added, “Let’s hope it’s not too serious. At the moment, I don't feel good about it.”
