Konstantinos Karetsas is out. He was injured just a few minutes after coming on as a substitute in the Bundesliga match against Union Berlin (0–0). BVB Managing Director Lars Ricken said on Monday: “Kos has a ligament injury in his foot. He won’t be traveling to Baku and won’t be able to play against Frankfurt on Saturday either. That’s frustrating, of course, but we initially expected the worst after seeing the reactions of his teammates.”

The flight eastward takes about five hours; Azerbaijan is two hours ahead of Germany. Upon arrival, the Borussians will familiarize themselves with the venue: A press conference with Niko Kovac and one of the players will first take place at the Olympic Stadium (live on BVB-TV starting at 4:30 p.m. German time). This will be followed by the final training session.

There were two changes to the starting lineup compared to the previous week’s 11-0 rout at Stadion Rote Erde. Up front, Rita Schumacher replaced Annika Enderle in the starting lineup, while Frederike Kempe took Melanie Schuster’s place in the starting defense.

Match Summary
The Borussia women got off to an energetic start on Cologne’s artificial turf field, with Ann-Sophie Vogel initially targeting the hosts’ right side of the defense. The Black and Yellows’ crosses and set pieces in the opening phase were all extremely dangerous. While Ramona Maier scored an offside goal off a corner kick as early as the 4th minute, Alex Popp scored a legitimate header in the 7th minute to give her team a 1-0 lead.

Rita Schumacher, who delivered the cross, also set up the second goal two minutes later. Frederike Kempe headed in a sharply taken corner kick in the 9th minute to make it 2–0. Amid the flurry of goals in the opening phase, Jenske Steenwijk—who controlled a rebound in the 14th minute and finished with her left foot—added to the Black and Yellows’ lead, making it 3–0.

Dortmund’s enthusiasm didn’t wane even after taking a three-goal lead: In the 22nd minute, Rita Schumacher hit the inside post following a pinpoint through ball from Ricarda Walkling. The BVB Women kept the pace high, particularly through quick ball recoveries, and pushed their opponents deep into their own half.

At the start of the second half, the determination seen in the first half was initially lacking. For example, in the 53rd minute, Alex Popp missed a chance when she was denied by goalkeeper Leonore Gruber in a one-on-one situation. Midway through the second half, Marina Scholz came on for the standout Jenske Steenwijk and hit the post just 30 seconds after entering the game.

The Black and Yellows continued to control the game and scored their long-overdue fourth goal in the 77th minute through Annika Enderle, who had also come on as a substitute. Just three minutes later, the goal scorer laid the ball off to the onrushing Marina Scholz, who rewarded herself with a volley from close range for the fifth and final goal of the match (80th minute).

Thanks to the 5-0 road win, the BVB Women, with 27 points, further extend their lead over MSV Duisburg (21 points) and the Bayer 04 Leverkusen U23 team, which lost to VfR Warbeyen this weekend.

Preview
: On the tenth matchday of the Regionalliga West, the BVB Women will host the SGS Essen U21s at Rote Erde Stadium.

To manage the workload, Hirschnagl rotated the squad heavily and changed the starting lineup in nearly every position compared to the match in Norway. Only Tom Faust remained in the starting lineup.

These two convincing performances bode well for the next international match on Tuesday against Sabah FK. Following a 2-3 opening-match loss to Villarreal CF and the rout in Norway, BVB currently sits in 13th place. With another win in the Azerbaijani capital, the team could secure a strong starting position for the upcoming challenging matches against Real Betis (November 4), Arsenal FC (November 24), and Inter Milan (December 9). U23 players Aaron Held, Tim Degener, and Fadi Zarqelain are also expected to be part of the squad again. There was recently positive news regarding Jan-Luca Riedl, who made his comeback in the 6-2 win over Oberhausen after a lengthy injury layoff. Keron Hagemann, who had previously been struggling with health issues, also returned to action in the first half. Peniel Poba, Johann Jaensch, Mats Brauckmann, Amine Leffite, Marwan Mirza, Lenni Strößner, and Luis Alaze remain unavailable due to injury or illness.

Opponent
Two games, zero points, no goals scored: Sabah FK’s start to the UEFA Youth League has been sobering. As a result, the Azerbaijani youth team currently sits in second-to-last place in the 36-team standings. This weak start comes as no surprise. Last season, a team from Azerbaijan already struggled greatly to hold its own at the international youth level. Qarabag Agdam finished the group stage in last place and lost all six matches with a goal difference of minus 29.

Special Praise
During the 5-0 victory in Norway, Fadi Zarqelain particularly stood out and received special praise from his coach for his performance. “When we needed him most, he really made a big difference for us,” said Hirschnagl about the forward, who transferred from Hertha BSC to Dortmund in the summer of 2023.

Like Aaron Held and Tim Degener, Zarqelain is actually part of the U23 squad, but he bolstered the U19 team for their Youth League match. The decision to promote the then-17-year-old to the U23s right at the start of the season is increasingly paying off. According to Hirschnagl, Zarqelain has made noticeable progress thanks to the higher demands of the Regionalliga. “Fadi has become tougher in one-on-one situations and is a technically skilled soccer player. In the 13th minute, a shot by Mutove was blocked, but six minutes later, BVB took the lead. Ayman Azhil sent Arne Wessels down the left flank with a long ball. Wessels’ cross found Dos Santos, who headed the ball into the net unmarked to give his team the lead (19th minute). Shortly thereafter, BVB added to their lead. Once again, Azhil set up the goal with a precise pass to Sumbu. The attacking player flicked the ball on with his head to Mutove, who also finished with a header to make it 2–0 (24th minute).

Then, out of nowhere, SC Wiedenbrück pulled one back. In the 29th minute, Marius Zentler received the ball following a combination play down the right flank and fired it decisively into the near corner to make it 1–2. At the other end, Mutove narrowly missed scoring Dortmund’s third goal after a shot by Finn Fuchs. Instead, Wiedenbrück managed to equalize: After Dortmund lost possession while building up play, the hosts quickly transitioned on the counter. Niklas Tuppeck took advantage of Silas Ostrzinski’s positioning and lifted the ball over the Dortmund goalkeeper in the 36th minute to make it 2–2.

The first notable chance of the second half belonged to Emre Aydinel, whose shot was confidently saved by Ostrzinski. In the 78th minute, substitute Zarqelain cut into the penalty area from the right and was brought down. The referee awarded a penalty kick. Azhil stepped up and confidently converted it into the lower right corner to give his team a 3–2 lead (79th minute). Shortly afterward, Malik Hodroj failed to capitalize on the next good opportunity, as his shot was stopped by Wiedenbrück goalkeeper Lukas Kasparek.

In the closing stages, events unfolded rapidly: Tim Degener was sent on a run with a long ball, prompting Kasparek to rush out of his goal and clear the ball with a header. In doing so, the goalkeeper struck the Dortmund player in the face with his knee and was shown a red card. The Black and Yellows were unable to capitalize on the resulting free kick.

In the sixth minute of stoppage time, BVB finally sealed the victory. Wiedenbrück threw everything forward one last time, but Dortmund countered calmly down the left flank. Wessels tried to play the ball into the middle, but Furkan Yilmaz unfortunately deflected the cross into his own net. This sealed the 4-2 away victory and the team’s fourth straight win.

Looking Ahead

BVB’s U23s face their next challenge in the Regionalliga West as early as this coming Friday (October 23, live on LEAGUES).
