Bremen Comes Before Munich! What BVB Is Relying On in the Cup

Borussia Dortmund, currently second in the standings, will travel to Munich for the top-of-the-table clash this coming Saturday. But the dominant topic at Borsigplatz is Tuesday night’s cup match at 8:45 p.m. (live on ZDF, Sky, and via internet radio on the BVB app) against Werder Bremen.

“First things first: just Bremen! To be honest, we haven’t even thought about Bayern yet,” Lars Ricken emphasized on Saturday evening after the narrow but well-deserved 1-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. “We really are playing every three days. On Tuesday, against a strong Bremen team, we obviously want to advance,” he added.

The atmosphere in the stadium should carry the team into the round of 16. “It’s a sellout, and the fans will be in high spirits,” said Ricken, who raved about the atmosphere during the home game against Eintracht: “The South Stand was so loud, and then the two side stands got to their feet too. The fans can really help a lot, pushing us to get that last bit of extra effort.”

At a sold-out SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, BVB aims to successfully hold onto a lead 18 days after the two teams faced off in the Bundesliga (2–2). “We’re especially motivated right after the last game,” announced Gregor Kobel: “I love playing in the cup—it’s a really awesome competition. It’s time for our team to really dig deep in it again.” That means advancing to the round of 16—and hopefully even further.

It won’t be until late Tuesday evening that the Borussians will turn their attention to the league showdown against FC Bayern. Of course, that didn’t stop coach Niko Kovac from sending his ailing colleague Vincent Kompany a text message wishing him a speedy recovery. “I wish him nothing but the very best. He’s not only a great coach, but also a great guy. The most important thing is that he recovers fully and gets well again!”
