BVB and RWE Commission Battery Storage System at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK
The battery storage system has a capacity of 3.7 megawatts and can deliver this output over a period of just over an hour. The photovoltaic system, which went into operation in December 2025, comprises 11,132 solar modules and has a capacity of more than 5 megawatts (MWp). By coupling the battery with the new PV system, the generated electricity can be used even when the sun isn’t shining. With the new photovoltaic system, BVB can cover up to 45 percent of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK’s electricity needs.
Carsten Cramer, Chairman of the Executive Board of Borussia Dortmund: “SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is not only our iconic home but also a central element of our comprehensive decarbonization strategy. With the battery storage system, we are working together with RWE to complete a forward-looking energy concept that makes our solar power even more usable. We are pleased that our stadium will continue to stand for resource-efficient and innovative practices in the future.”
Dr. Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE AG: “With the commissioning of the battery storage system, the entire system—comprising the photovoltaic system and the battery—at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is now fully operational. The integration of both systems allows us to use the solar power generated on-site even more flexibly—even when the sun isn’t shining. The experts from BVB and RWE have breathed life and energy into our partnership through this project. This provides a solid foundation for further joint developments.”
As a Premium Partner and an important part of the “BVB Empowers” initiative, RWE will continue to support BVB in optimizing energy management at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK as part of this six-year partnership. The goal is to further increase the stadium’s contribution to energy security, energy efficiency, and decarbonization.
