What Borussia and Bremen Have in Common in the DFB Pokal

The next highlight at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is scheduled for Tuesday: Following their Bundesliga clash 18 days earlier, Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen will face off again, this time in the second round of the DFB Pokal. Kickoff is at 8:45 p.m. (live on ZDF, Sky, and the BVB app).

A Rich Cup History

Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen are among Germany’s most successful clubs in the DFB Pokal. BVB has won the “Pott” five times (most recently in 2021), while Werder has won it six times (most recently in 2009). Only one club has won the cup competition more often: Bayern Munich holds the record with 21 titles.

Final Specialists

Both BVB and SVW have each reached the German Cup final ten times. Only Bayern Munich, with 25 final appearances, and Schalke 04 (twelve times) have reached the final more often. The eleventh meeting between the two teams will take place on Tuesday at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. Dortmund and Bremen have faced each other directly in the final once before: In June 1989, BVB prevailed 4–1.

Werder turns the tide…

Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen are set to face off for the ninth time in the DFB Pokal. In four of their first five cup matches against the Green-Whites, the Black and Yellows came out on top. In the most recent three encounters, however, Bremen advanced each time. All three of those matches took place in the round of 16; on Tuesday, the teams will face off as early as the second round. In their 3-2 victory in February 2020, Bremen last eliminated a Bundesliga team—in this case, BVB—from the DFB Pokal.

… but recently faltered in the West

For Werder, the past four years have seen their run end four times in a row against a western club: in 2021 in Paderborn (second round), in 2022 at Viktoria Köln (first round), and in both 2023 and 2024 at Arminia Bielefeld. Will the west once again be their final stop? (br)
