Pre-Match Report

As League Leaders Against Bremen – “We’re Enjoying This Position”

The three-week international break is over: League-leading Borussia Dortmund kicks off Matchday 5 of the Bundesliga on Friday evening (8:30 p.m.) with a home game against Werder Bremen. In the race for the top spots, coach Niko Kovac’s team has a chance to take the lead and maintain its position at the top of the table. It marks the start of nine games in four weeks.

The scenario

Four games, four wins: Borussia Dortmund is the only team in the Bundesliga to have earned the maximum number of points so far. The last time BVB had a season start like this was in 2015–16. Two years prior to that, they even managed five wins in the first five matchdays.

Thanks to the maximum haul of twelve points, BVB leads the table. For the first time since May 2023, the Black and Yellows are back at the top after a completed matchday and are now the ones being chased rather than the chasers. “The lads have worked hard for this. It’s just a snapshot—we’ve played a little more than 10 percent of the Bundesliga games,” said BVB coach Niko Kovac. “We’re enjoying this position right now, but we also know we have a responsibility to keep working hard to hold onto it for as long as possible.” Now the goal is to get back into the rhythm right away: “I hope we can pull it off, put in a good performance against Werder Bremen, and pick up the points we need to get back into the flow.”

Squad

Twenty BVB first team players have been on international duty for their national teams over the past three weeks. The many games and trips have taken their toll: there are still question marks regarding the availability of some returning players. Thursday’s final training session should give Niko Kovac more clarity on who will be available for the home game. You can read about the team’s personnel situation ahead of the match here.

Opponent

At this point last season, Werder Bremen had collected only four points; now they already have seven. That’s their best start since their promotion in 2022. Kovac doesn’t want to read too much into the fact that the eighth-place team recently lost 0–7 to Twente Enschede in a friendly. “I know that Werder Bremen is really good. They’ve gotten off to a strong start to the season, and I expect a team that will give us a run for our money,” the coach explains.

Niclas Füllkrug has played a major role in the team’s strong showing in the Bundesliga. The former Dortmund player, now back at Werder, has scored once in each of the past three Bundesliga matches. However, the forward has never scored in four consecutive league matches. Füllkrug has also failed to score in seven matches against his former club. In the 2023–24 season, he scored twelve goals for BVB in 29 Bundesliga matches. “He feels at home there and will naturally be motivated to play against his former teammates,” said Kovac. “But it’s not just about him. There are ten other players on the field we have to deal with. We have to impose our style of play, and it doesn’t matter who’s playing on the other side.”

Strong Streak

The matchup between Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen is one of the Bundesliga’s most historic and frequently played rivalries—with the edge going to BVB. Only against Eintracht Frankfurt (52 wins) have the Black and Yellows won more often than against Werder (51). A win on Friday would mark BVB’s 52nd Bundesliga victory over the Green-Whites. At the same time, BVB could extend its current streak: Dortmund has been unbeaten against Werder for seven league games. During that span, there have been five wins and two draws.
