Postgame Quotes: “We’ll Learn from This”

BVB Managing Director for Sport Lars Ricken, Head Coach Niko Kovac, Nico Schlotterbeck, Waldemar Anton and Daniel Svensson shared their thoughts after the 2-2 draw with Werder Bremen. Check out the postgame quotes!

Lars Ricken (in the mixed zone): “It’s pure disappointment. We knew it would be a tough game. Still, we got off to a good start, and had a lot of possession — although maybe we didn’t create enough scoring chances in the first half. That got better in the second half. We had made it a point to want to put away these kinds of games, and we actually did that by going up 2-0. Bremen then attacked with the courage of their desperation and did a good job with that. In the end, we have to look ahead. We have a lot of work ahead of us. As disappointed as we are right now, we can take some confidence from our start to the season.”

Niko Kovac (in the press conference): “For eighty-eight minutes, we we put pressure on our opponent so effectively that we had them on the ropes. But we didn’t manage to close out the final eight minutes in the right way. We only have ourselves to blame for that. We had plenty of chances in the second half. Of course, we’re disappointed. That’s two points lost for us. Hopefully, we’ll learn from those last eight minutes.”

Nico Schlotterbeck (on Sky): “We actually had everything under control until the 88th minute, and then you give up two goals and end up with a draw. Fülle is Fülle. He is excellent at heading the ball and has an incredible leap. That's obvious.”

Waldemar Anton (in the mixed zone): “After going up two-zero, we went away from our game plan. And to be honest, we didn’t defend well anymore. We were committing fouls because we got there too late. That's beyond frustrating. The draw was unnecessary because we really had the game under control. In the end, we only came away with one point. Now, it's about working hard to make sure it doesn't happen again.”

Daniel Svensson (on BVB-TV): “I’m obviously very disappointed. We dominated for most of the game. We needed to close out the game after scoring those two goals and keep the three points here. So in the end, it was very disappointing for us. Switching sides with Maxi Beier might have made it a little easier to get into one-on-one situations. We created more chances that way and became more dangerous, so it was a good move.”
