Why Real Betis Brings Back Memories of That Magical Night Against Málaga

When Borussia Dortmund faces Real Betis on Wednesday (9 p.m.), memories of one of the most dramatic evenings in recent BVB history will come flooding back: the legendary 2013 Champions League quarterfinal against Málaga CF, when the Black and Yellows secured their spot in the semifinals with two goals in stoppage time.

There’s also a special connection on the bench: Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini (73) was on the sidelines for Málaga CF back then. For the Chilean, who has been with Betis since 2020, the match also marks a milestone—it will be his 70th appearance as a coach in the UEFA Champions League. So far, he has recorded 30 wins, 23 draws, and 16 losses with five different clubs.

There are also some connections between the two clubs in terms of players. David Odonkor moved to Seville after the 2006 World Cup and remained with Betis until 2011. Marc Bartra transferred from BVB to the Andalusian club in 2018. Additionally, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Victor Ikpeba both wore the jerseys of both clubs during their playing careers.

Betis captain Isco also shares a special history with Borussia Dortmund: In the UEFA Champions League, he has faced BVB with three different clubs—Málaga, Sevilla FC, and Real Madrid—for whom he scored a goal in the first leg of the 2014 quarterfinals.

Strong Home Record—Even Against Spanish Teams

Borussia Dortmund can head into the match against Betis with a healthy dose of confidence. Home-field advantage is a major factor in BVB’s favor: Of their last 24 Champions League matches at home, BVB has won 15. The team has lost only twice. Since standing-room-only sections were reintroduced for the 2022–23 season, the record has been even more impressive: 14 wins, seven draws, and just one loss.

BVB has also consistently performed well against Spanish teams at home. In 25 home games against Spanish clubs to date, they have recorded 13 wins, seven draws, and five losses. They have won five of their last six home games against Spanish teams. (br)
