Borussia Dortmund and SV Elversberg: Didn’t something happen there?

German runner-up Borussia Dortmund will face newly promoted SV Elversberg on Saturday (3:30 p.m., live on Sky, on internet radio, and on the BVB app). This isn’t the first time the two clubs have faced off …

Almost exactly 45 years ago, there was already a competitive match between Borussia Dortmund and SV Elversberg: On October 10, 1981, BVB—then ranked eleventh in the Bundesliga—faced the Southwest Oberliga club in the DFB Cup. “Elv” had previously qualified for the second main round for the second time in club history with a 3-1 victory over Kreisliga club TSV Röttenbach.

At the Ludwigsparkstadion in Saarbrücken, BVB won 4–1 in front of just 7,500 spectators. Manfred Burgsmüller scored twice. The other BVB goals were scored by Jupp Tenhagen and Meinolf Koch. Shortly before the end of the match, Josef Leonhard beat national team goalkeeper Eike Immel to score a consolation goal for the Saarland side. Branko Zebec was the BVB coach.

For Elversberg, this remained their last appearance on a major stage for 27 years. The club has only been a regular participant in the DFB Cup since 2009. In 2023, they earned promotion to the 3. Liga, and a year later, they made the leap to the 2. Bundesliga.
