Facts: Borussia's 100th victory at the top level
Anniversary: Borussia Dortmund became the second German club to reach the milestone of 100 victories in the UEFA Champions League and its predecessor, the European Cup. It took BVB 206 games (40 draws, 66 defeats) to achieve this. However, there is something peculiar about this statistic: on 27 August 2003, Borussia did not leave the pitch celebrating, but the match was officially recorded as a BVB victory by UEFA. After a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of the qualifying round at Club Brugge, the second leg ended 2-1 to Borussia Dortmund after 120 minutes, hence the ‘victory’. The aggregate score was level, so penalties were required to determine which team would advance to the group stage. They lost the penalty shoot-out due to misses by Marcio Amoroso and André Bergdölmo, so they lost the tie but won the match. Borussia Dortmund secured their first victory in the European Cup on 1 August 1956 with a 4-3 win over Spora Luxembourg. Their first success in the UEFA Champions League came on 18 October 1995 with a 1-0 win against Steaua Bucharest.
Head-to-head: In knockout ties against Italian teams, Borussia Dortmund have advanced four times and been eliminated seven times, not including finals. BVB first achieved success in 1993 against AS Roma. Since then, the record stands at 4-4.
Goalscorer: After scoring five goals in his last three Bundesliga matches, Serhou Guirassy added his fourth goal in the Champions League this season. He also set up the goal that made it 2-0.
Home advantage? In knockout rounds with the first leg at home, the Black & Yellows have advanced 21 times and been eliminated 17 times. Most recently, BVB have been successful twice in a row (in 2025 against Lille and in 2024 against Paris Saint-Germain) after a first leg at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.
Statistics: The Black & Yellows faced an opponent from Serie A for the 43rd time. They've recorded 13 wins, eight draws and 22 defeats.
Home record: The Black & Yellows have lost only two of their last 23 home matches in the UEFA Champions League, recording 14 wins and seven draws.
