Alex Popp set to join BVB in the summer

Borussia Dortmund are delighted to announce a top signing: Alexandra Popp (34) is joining the Black & Yellows on a free transfer from VfL Wolfsburg for the 2026/27 season. The three-time Footballer of the Year has signed a contract running until 30 June 2029.

Borussia Dortmund’s management spokesperson, Carsten Cramer, says: “Alexandra Popp is one of the most influential figures in women’s football, both nationally and internationally. The success she has had with a top club like VfL Wolfsburg and the German national team is truly impressive. We are delighted that we have managed to inspire Alex to join us on our ambitious journey.”

“Signing Alex is a major statement of our ambitions. The fact that a player of her calibre has consciously chosen BVB makes us incredibly proud and sends a strong signal about the importance and future of women’s football at Dortmund,” emphasises Managing Director Svenja Schlenker.

Popp arrives at Dortmund with experience, having notched up 145 international caps (67 goals), 332 Bundesliga appearances (158 goals) and 89 Champions League matches (36 goals) to date. The trophies she has won in her career include the Champions League three times, seven German league titles, the DFB Pokal 13 times and Olympic gold in Rio in 2016. After 14 years at VfL Wolfsburg, the Witten-born player is now returning to the Ruhr region.

That\u2019s why I don\u2019t want to miss the chance to play in a Borussia Dortmund shirt. My heart beats for this club, and that\u2019s why I chose Dortmund.\u201d<\/p>\nBut you\u2019ve also repeatedly emphasised over the past few weeks that it\u2019s actually a gut decision. How much did your heart have a say in this decision? How loud was it? \n<\/b>\u201cIt was extremely loud. I can tell that Dortmund are getting better and better. They\u2019ve been on the up every year and are doing a great job. BVB\u2019s interest made me proud from the very first moment and I immediately had a big grin on my face. Nevertheless, I naturally had to weigh up certain things. Is it really the right move? The second division and the regional league are hugely different from the top flight and also from the Champions League, where I was still playing this year. But it was also clear to me that if I decide to do this, then I have to be fully invested, and I am fully invested. I don\u2019t want any special treatment; I\u2019m fully committed. I\u2019ve decided to give it my all. Ever since you turned professional, you\u2019ve been competing for national and international titles. That isn\u2019t the case at Borussia Dortmund just yet. What are your goals as you embark on your journey with Borussia Dortmund? \n<\/b>\u201cEveryone knows Borussia Dortmund\u2019s plan is to get into the top flight as quickly as possible. I want to help ensure we get to the top flight as soon as possible and establish ourselves there. But first we need to see which league I\u2019ll be starting in. Then I want to set our sights on promotion together with the team. Off the pitch, I want to help in terms of how we can continue to professionalise, what\u2019s next in terms of infrastructure, what else is needed. That\u2019s exciting too. I\u2019ve experienced a lot, and here they\u2019re still building things up. That\u2019s why I want to contribute not just on the pitch but off it as well.\u201d<\/p>\nWhat is your view of what has been achieved here at Borussia Dortmund over the past six and a half years? \n<\/b>\u201cI\u2019ve been following the club\u2019s progress from the very start. You have to take your hat off to them for getting promoted every year. That\u2019s no mean feat and it\u2019s not that easy, even in the amateur leagues. Off the pitch too, they\u2019re doing a great job when you think about training camps, fitness tests and injury prevention. That\u2019s a whole different ball game and it\u2019s moving towards professionalism. It\u2019s lovely to see that it wasn\u2019t just lip service about wanting to reach the top flight, but that there\u2019s real passion and a great deal of hard work behind it. You\u2019ve seen that year after year, including with the transfers every summer. And now we know  that a training centre is being built for the women\u2019s team, so I think some women\u2019s Bundesliga clubs could learn a thing or two from that.\u201d<\/p>\nYou wore the BVB shirt as a little girl, as a fan. What does it mean to you to wear this BVB shirt with your name on it as a player? \n<\/b>\u201cTo be honest, it still feels a bit crazy when I think about it. I have a clear picture in my mind of myself as a little girl standing in the Westfalenstadion wearing a Dortmund shirt and a cap and waving a flag. Knowing that I\u2019ll now be allowed to take to the pitch officially in that shirt makes me proud. I don\u2019t want to call it a childhood dream because there wasn\u2019t a women\u2019s team at Borussia Dortmund when I was little, but from the moment the women\u2019s team was founded, I always had it in my head that it would be lovely to wear that shirt one day. I\u2019m looking forward to that; it\u2019s great fun. I\u2019m just delighted to be playing for Dortmund \u2013 at the Rote Erde and maybe even at Signal Iduna Park one day. That would make me particularly happy. I want to help ensure we get to the top flight as soon as possible and establish ourselves there. But first we need to see which league I\u2019ll be starting in. Then I want to set our sights on promotion together with the team. Off the pitch, I want to help in terms of how we can continue to professionalise, what\u2019s next in terms of infrastructure, what else is needed. That\u2019s exciting too. I\u2019ve experienced a lot, and here they\u2019re still building things up. That\u2019s why I want to contribute not just on the pitch but off it as well.\u201d<\/p>\nWhat is your view of what has been achieved here at Borussia Dortmund over the past six and a half years? \n<\/b>\u201cI\u2019ve been following the club\u2019s progress from the very start. You have to take your hat off to them for getting promoted every year. That\u2019s no mean feat and it\u2019s not that easy, even in the amateur leagues. Off the pitch too, they\u2019re doing a great job when you think about training camps, fitness tests and injury prevention. That\u2019s a whole different ball game and it\u2019s moving towards professionalism. It\u2019s lovely to see that it wasn\u2019t just lip service about wanting to reach the top flight, but that there\u2019s real passion and a great deal of hard work behind it. You\u2019ve seen that year after year, including with the transfers every summer. And now we know  that a training centre is being built for the women\u2019s team, so I think some women\u2019s Bundesliga clubs could learn a thing or two from that.\u201d<\/p>\nYou wore the BVB shirt as a little girl, as a fan. What does it mean to you to wear this BVB shirt with your name on it as a player? \n<\/b>\u201cTo be honest, it still feels a bit crazy when I think about it. I have a clear picture in my mind of myself as a little girl standing in the Westfalenstadion wearing a Dortmund shirt and a cap and waving a flag. Knowing that I\u2019ll now be allowed to take to the pitch officially in that shirt makes me proud. I don\u2019t want to call it a childhood dream because there wasn\u2019t a women\u2019s team at Borussia Dortmund when I was little, but from the moment the women\u2019s team was founded, I always had it in my head that it would be lovely to wear that shirt one day. The fact that the time has finally come is absolutely crazy, but I\u2019m absolutely thrilled.\u201d<\/p>\n<img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/2026/03/14/popp-interview1/Popp-Rote-Erde.jpg\" data-assetref=\"Popp-Rote-Erde-1773483456180\"><\/p>\nThe Rote Erde stadium is going to be your new home ground. What have you noticed so far about the BVB women\u2019s matches there \u2013 the fans, the attendance figures?   \n<\/b>\u201cI\u2019ve noticed quite a few things. I watched the first derby on TV. It was mad how many people turned up at the stadium. I also watched the DFB Pokal match against Bayern Munich. That showed what\u2019s possible. The Rote Erde was sold out. I\u2019m looking forward to that; it\u2019s great fun. I\u2019m just delighted to be playing for Dortmund \u2013 at the Rote Erde and maybe even at Signal Iduna Park one day. That would make me particularly happy.
