Successful return: BVB women celebrate 4-1 away win
Due to last-minute absences of Paula Reimann (Achilles tendon), Marina Scholz (calf), Celina Baum (ankle) and Jenske Steenwijk (ill), head coach Markus Högner’s team made three changes to the line-up that won the friendly against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Melanie Schuster, Nora Willeke and Rita Schumacher started the match in Mönchengladbach.
Early lead for the Black & Yellows
The Black & Yellows set the tone for an away win early on as Annika Enderle's delicate curling shot from the edge of the area gave BVB women a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute. The build-up down the left wing was once again led by the very agile Jasmin Jabbes. Eight minutes later, goalkeeper Laura van der Laan, who was celebrating her 28th birthday that day, prevented the equaliser. The Black & Yellows’ number 1 came out on top in a one-on-one with VfL striker Joy Babatunde, who had broken through.
After that, the BVB women did not give away any further scoring chances. Up front, the team created good opportunities, though some were not finished off with enough conviction. Shortly before the half-time whistle, the Borussia women forced an own goal (45+2) from the hosts and went into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Fine goals from both sides
The BVB women remained in control of the game even after the break. Rita Schumacher scored a fine goal from outside the area when she curled the ball just under the crossbar to extend the lead to 3-0 (60). Shortly afterwards, the hosts pulled one back to make it 1-3 (65) through Joy Babatunde's long-range effort from 35 yards.
Black & Yellows striker Emilia Pauls then converted a rebound from a cross by Mia Böger in the 76th minute. Her first competitive goal for BVB also rounded off the 4-1 away win against Mönchengladbach’s second team. In the closing minutes, Finnja Schriek and Lisa Sophie Gomulka made their first appearances for the BVB women in the Regionalliga.
