Svensson and Özcan secure a place at the World Cup – Sabitzer scores for Austria

On Tuesday evening, nine Borussia players were in action with their national teams. Two secured their places at the World Cup, while one scored the winning goal for his team.

Having led 2-1 at half time, Sweden ended up winning their World Cup play-off against Poland 3-2, thereby securing their place in the finals this summer. Daniel Svensson started on the right wing in the 3-2 victory and played the full 90 minutes.

Turkey also qualified for the World Cup. Following a goalless first half, Salih Özcan’s side won their play-off final away in Kosovo 1-0. The Borussia player came on as a substitute in the 83rd minute.

Austria celebrated a 1-0 victory in their friendly against South Korea. Marcel Sabitzer scored the only goal of the match with a first-time volley (48). The midfielder was substituted in the 78th minute. In the same minute, Carney Chukwuemeka came on to make his second international appearance for Austria.

The Borussia derby did not materialise in the match between Norway and Switzerland as Gregor Kobel did not feature in the goalless friendly. Julian Ryerson came on as a substitute in the second half (46).

In the friendly between Algeria and Uruguay, Ramy Bensebaini played the full 90 minutes as the left-sided defender in a back three. The match ended 0-0.

Serhou Guirassy started up front for Guinea in their friendly against Benin. The Borussia player missed a penalty in the 38th minute. Benin won the match 1-0.

England’s U21 national team faced Moldova’s U21s in a European Championship qualifier and won 4-1. Jobe Bellingham played the full 90 minutes in midfield.

The Italian U19 national team also took part in the European Championship qualifiers, facing Turkey’s youth side. Luca Reggiani played in central defence in the 1-1 draw.

The German national team had already played on Monday evening, winning 2-1 against Ghana.
