Match Report

BVB women beat Rhade 3-1

Borussia Dortmund’s women’s team secured another three points on Matchday 22 of the Regionalliga West with coach Markus Högner's side beating SSV Rhade 3-1. After an early lead through Noreen Günnewig, the opponent equalised in the second half through a penalty. However, thanks to a quick response and increased pace in the final stages of the game, the Black & Yellows ultimately prevailed deservedly.

Personnel matters
Borussia Dortmund took to the pitch with almost the same starting line-up as a week earlier in Mecklenbeck – only forward Marina Scholz was a late scratch. Rita Schumacher returned to the starting XI in her place.

The match
From the opening whistle, the Black & Yellows pressed directly towards the Rhade goal, which manifested itself after three minutes with an early header from Annika Enderle. Jenske Steenwijk had provided the assist from a free kick. Five minutes later, when the ball appeared to be in the net after an attempt by Yasu Wöhrn, the assistant referee on the sideline ruled it offside. Shortly afterward, however, the home team deservedly took the lead! After an unfortunate clearance by goalkeeper Sabine Reinhold, Annika Enderle intercepted the ball and found Noreen Günnewig in the centre of the penalty area, who simply had to tap it into the empty net (9).

Following this, Borussia pushed the game further into the opponent’s half, creating additional opportunities: Rita Schumacher tried her luck twice with long-range shots (15 and 34); Paula Reimann (19) and Annika Enderle (45) also had chances to extend the lead for the Black & Yellows with headers in the first half. Despite consistent possession high up the pitch, Borussia’s attacks, at times, lacked precision in the first half.

Immediate response to the equaliser
The second half began without any substitutions and in light rain. While it initially appeared the game would continue unchanged, Dortmund suffered a setback in the 57th minute: During a clearance attempt in the penalty area, Dortmund’s goalkeeper, Laura van der Laan, committed a foul on her opponent, Demi Ehler, instead of playing the ball. Rhade’s Anna Söbbing converted the resulting penalty to equalise.

The disappointment over the 1-1 draw didn’t last long, however. Just a minute later, immediately after the game had restarted, BVB won a corner kick at the other end. Rita Schumacher delivered it perfectly onto the head of Frederike Kempe: 2-1, and thus the immediate response! Shortly afterward, Schumacher herself could have extended the lead (64), after a pass from Annika Enderle, but she fired her shot over the crossbar of the Rhade goal.

In the closing stages of the match, the 1,425 fans at the Rote Erde stadium witnessed a determined home team pushing for the decisive third goal. Their efforts were finally rewarded in the 76th minute. Following a long and precise cross from Annika Enderle, substitute Ronja Leubner was perfectly positioned to head home for a 3-1 lead (76). The BVB women maintained their high pace until extra time. But unfortunately, both Jasmin Jabbes (93) and Rita Schumacher (94) were denied a fourth goal.
