BVB becomes the first club worldwide to launch a football mode in Fortnite
Borussia Dortmund is consistently expanding its presence in digital worlds to bring football and fan culture to where a young, gaming-savvy audience feels at home. Most recently, BVB launched its new home kit in the Roblox game FIFA Supersoccer, achieving outstanding reach and engagement figures. “Bolzplatz-Liebe” in Fortnite is the next step in this strategy – and simultaneously opens gaming environments as a platform for partners and sponsors.
Alexander Mühl, Director of Marketing & Digitalization at Borussia Dortmund, explains: “Football brings people together – on the street pitch just as much as in the virtual world. With ‘Bolzplatz-Liebe’, we create exactly that connection: a place where our community meets, plays and experiences BVB – whether in Dortmund or anywhere in the world. For us, this is the logical evolution of what football is all about.”
Together with development studio DayZero, Borussia Dortmund has developed a fast-paced and action-packed 2v2 mode. The map will be continuously developed based on community feedback and expanded with additional content, events and activations. Tobias Egartner, CEO of DayZero, explains: “Borussia Dortmund recognized early on that the future of fan engagement also takes place in digital worlds. Together, we are developing experiences that connect people, strengthen communities and make the unique culture of the club tangible for a new generation. Gaming platforms are today one of the most important touchpoints for Gen Z and Gen Alpha. For football clubs, they offer the opportunity to reach young audiences where they spend their leisure time, connect with friends and live out their passion for sport and entertainment.”
At the heart of the experience is the soccer court on the Max-Michallek-Platz – a real football pitch in Dortmund, just a few meters from the legendary Borsigplatz. For many years, football has been played and celebrated here, with football culture lived and breathed. “Our district at Borsigplatz connects us with Borussia Dortmund through a shared history. We are delighted that this history is now being continued digitally and that our VIVAWEST neighborhood serves as the stage for the BVB map in Fortnite,” says Carsten Gröning, Head of Central Neighborhood Development at VIVAWEST.
