Niko Kovac (on Sky): “I was hoping for a win. The way we pulled it off, especially in the first half, makes me very happy. That’s the kind of football we’re capable of playing and the kind we need to play — especially at home. It has left us wanting more. For me, what matters most is how many chances we created. That's because the more chances you have, the higher the likelihood that you’ll win games. What really saddens me is the fact Giannis (Konstantelias) got injured and that we're looking at a more serious issue. Our team doctor didn't seem too optimistic.”

Ole Book (on Sky): “The first 45 minutes were very dominant — very lively and creative by our team. Hamburg didn’t have a single scoring chance, whereas we had a lot of them. It was fun to watch. Our counter-press was strong. Kosta [Karetsas] and Giannis [Konstantelias] really enjoyed attacking alongside Serhou [Guirassy]. We played really well in the first half. We’re definitely concerned that we might be looking at a serious injury [to Konstantelias]. Testing is underway. I feel incredibly sorry for the boys because they’ve settled in well here and have made a great impact from day one.”

Waldemar Anton (on Sky): “The first half was fantastic. It was a perfect half. We were able to execute on everything we had set out to do. We also started the second half pretty well. When you’re dominant like that, you obviously want to seal the deal. But then we struggled. That’s something we need to work on. One strong half won’t always be enough. Nonetheless, it’s also a sign of quality when you can play a man down late in a game and still win.”

Konstantinos Karetsas (on Sky): “I really enjoyed my first Bundesliga game. It was my first time playing in front of the Yellow Wall with all the fans! It was so loud. That was the best part for me today. During every significant play, we could hear the whole stadium. This is a new experience for me, and I’m incredibly grateful for it. In the end, I lacked a bit of efficiency. I should have scored. We need to work on our efficiency as a team in upcoming games as well. We need to take it one game at a time now. With our fans behind us, anything is possible.”

No video footage or photos of this historic moment existed, until now.<\/p>\nReconstructed from the memories of eyewitnesses, media reports, and data points, AI translated the goal into moving images - enabling football fans to experience the first goal in Bundesliga history in lifelike detail.<\/p>\n<h2>Meticulous reconstruction of an historic moment<\/b><\/h2>\nTeams from Vodafone and BVB worked for several months analysing archival material to help with the recreation. The team spoke with eyewitnesses such as Gerd Kolbe, BVB\u2019s chief historian and former press officer, Günther Konietzka, the goal scorer\u2019s brother, and Eugen Kraas, chairman of the largest BVB fan club, Oeventrop-Freienohl, to incorporate their personal memories into the reconstruction of the goal.<\/p>\nThe stadium atmosphere that day in 1963 was also recreated with the support of fans and experts, plus realistic conditions from the first matchday of the Bundesliga were simulated using multiple weather models.<\/p>\nThe AI-reconstructed first Bundesliga goal premiers in a documentary called \u201cThe Unseen Goal\u201d at the BORUSSEUM, BVB\u2019s club museum on 29 August and later on the same day also exclusively on Sky Sports News and across BVB\u2019s and Vodafone\u2019s YouTube channels.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sb7T94xIGpo\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube<\/a><\/p>\nBVB fans at Germany's largest football stadium, SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, also will see the footage of the goal on the stadium screens before the season opener against Hamburger SV. The film documenting the goal will then be permanently displayed as part of the collection at the German Football Museum in Dortmund.<\/p>\n<h2>Watzke: "This AI reconstruction is an absolute highlight"<\/h2>\nMarcel de Groot, CEO of Vodafone Germany, said: \u201cTogether with Borussia Dortmund, we interviewed eyewitnesses, reviewed media reports from the time and collected a range of data. Our AI experts used this material and several AI models to create a realistic reconstruction of the moment. After 63 years, AI is bringing a piece of German football history to life. The first goal in Bundesliga history can now be experienced by football fans through moving images and sound.\u201d<\/p>\nHans-Joachim Watzke, President of Borussia Dortmund said: \u201cTimo Konietzka was one of a kind and a great player. His goal against SV Werder Bremen back then is, of course, particularly well-suited for a project like this. The fact that there is absolutely no video footage made the project very challenging. For many fans who are very tradition-conscious \u2013 and that\u2019s certainly the case with BVB, but also with Werder Bremen \u2013 this AI reconstruction is an absolute highlight. We are very grateful to Vodafone for working with us to bring this challenging task to life with great dedication and using state-of-the-art technology. Everyone has a lot to look forward to.\u201d<\/p>\nThe reconstruction was created in collaboration with AI production company and IT specialists PROMPTR created motion models based on recordings of other BVB and SV Werder Bremen matches from that era, thereby determining the players\u2019 game strategies and behaviour in comparable game situations. Furthermore, BVB\u2019s under-19 team also reenacted the goal and the preceding sequence of play to help the AI achieve a high level of detail, richness and precision. Ultimately, the AI experts used various data points and multiple AI models for data analysis and image generation to recreate the goal. \n<\/p>\n\u201cI was very fortunate to be there in Bremen on August 24, 1963. Referee Ott blew the whistle at exactly 4:59 p.m. Everyone was sitting behind the BVB goal in high spirits, but things turned out differently than expected: Borussia Dortmund scored the first goal,\u201d recalls eyewitness Gerd Kolbe, former BVB press officer and current BVB chief historian. \u201cFrom today\u2019s perspective, it\u2019s absolutely unimaginable that not a single photograph of the goal was taken. I\u2019m incredibly happy that BVB and Vodafone have managed to bring this reenactment to life. No video footage or photos of this historic moment existed, until now.<\/p>\nReconstructed from the memories of eyewitnesses, media reports, and data points, AI translated the goal into moving images - enabling football fans to experience the first goal in Bundesliga history in lifelike detail.<\/p>\n<h2>Meticulous reconstruction of an historic moment<\/b><\/h2>\nTeams from Vodafone and BVB worked for several months analysing archival material to help with the recreation. The team spoke with eyewitnesses such as Gerd Kolbe, BVB\u2019s chief historian and former press officer, Günther Konietzka, the goal scorer\u2019s brother, and Eugen Kraas, chairman of the largest BVB fan club, Oeventrop-Freienohl, to incorporate their personal memories into the reconstruction of the goal.<\/p>\nThe stadium atmosphere that day in 1963 was also recreated with the support of fans and experts, plus realistic conditions from the first matchday of the Bundesliga were simulated using multiple weather models.<\/p>\nThe AI-reconstructed first Bundesliga goal premiers in a documentary called \u201cThe Unseen Goal\u201d at the BORUSSEUM, BVB\u2019s club museum on 29 August and later on the same day also exclusively on Sky Sports News and across BVB\u2019s and Vodafone\u2019s YouTube channels.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sb7T94xIGpo\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube<\/a><\/p>\nBVB fans at Germany's largest football stadium, SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, also will see the footage of the goal on the stadium screens before the season opener against Hamburger SV. The film documenting the goal will then be permanently displayed as part of the collection at the German Football Museum in Dortmund.<\/p>\n<h2>Watzke: "This AI reconstruction is an absolute highlight"<\/h2>\nMarcel de Groot, CEO of Vodafone Germany, said: \u201cTogether with Borussia Dortmund, we interviewed eyewitnesses, reviewed media reports from the time and collected a range of data. Our AI experts used this material and several AI models to create a realistic reconstruction of the moment. After 63 years, AI is bringing a piece of German football history to life. The first goal in Bundesliga history can now be experienced by football fans through moving images and sound.\u201d<\/p>\nHans-Joachim Watzke, President of Borussia Dortmund said: \u201cTimo Konietzka was one of a kind and a great player. His goal against SV Werder Bremen back then is, of course, particularly well-suited for a project like this. The fact that there is absolutely no video footage made the project very challenging. For many fans who are very tradition-conscious \u2013 and that\u2019s certainly the case with BVB, but also with Werder Bremen \u2013 this AI reconstruction is an absolute highlight. Furthermore, BVB\u2019s under-19 team also reenacted the goal and the preceding sequence of play to help the AI achieve a high level of detail, richness and precision. Ultimately, the AI experts used various data points and multiple AI models for data analysis and image generation to recreate the goal. \n<\/p>\n\u201cI was very fortunate to be there in Bremen on August 24, 1963.
