For BVB, this currently means a “Hamburg week”: Following Saturday’s 2-0 home victory over Hamburger SV to kick off the Bundesliga season, the team now heads north. The Borussians will face HEBC at HSV’s Volksparkstadion. “That helps the first-division team more than a fifth-division team,” says BVB coach Niko Kovac about the matchup in the stadium, which holds around 57,000 spectators. The Oberliga club’s home stadium, Professor-Reinmüller-Platz, has a capacity of 2,500 spectators. “We’re the favorites; we want to advance,” Kovac makes clear. “We’ll have a lot of possession and dominate the game. The opponent will sit deep and try to create chances on the counterattack or from set pieces. It’s up to us to take control of the game as quickly as possible so we can advance to the next round.”

The Hamburg neighborhood of Eimsbüttel is gearing up for the biggest game in HEBC’s club history: “Eimsbüttel is Purple!” and “Football’s coming, Eimsbüttel” can be seen throughout the neighborhood. Local businesses are supporting the soccer club, and the district office illuminates a purple heart on the facade every evening.

After seven wins in seven games, the club won the Hamburg Cup for the first time in May 2026 and advanced to the first main round of the DFB Cup. Defending the title is no longer possible: This season, the HEBC was already eliminated in the opening round of the Hamburg State Cup. In the Oberliga, the team has two wins and three losses after five games. But now the focus is on the DFB Cup match anyway: “We want to bring as much of what we’re capable of onto the field as possible and maybe make the stadium gasp once or twice. And then we’ll see what happens,” coach Philipp Obloch told NDR. A special note: For several HSV players who also play for HEBC, it’s “BVB Week.” On Saturday, they were in Dortmund on business; on Tuesday, they’ll face the Black and Yellows.
