Why Maxi Beier Was Named Man of the Match at Stuttgart

Maxi Beier enjoyed the moment in his usual calm and laidback manner. “For a forward, nothing's better than only having to say thank you," he remarked in reflecting on the goal he scored in the away game at Stuttgart, which secured victory and propelled his team to the top of the standings.

The 23-year-old once again operated as the attacking midfielder behind Serhou Guirassy. In the 70th minute, he converted a centering ball from substitute Jobe Bellingham to give BVB the lead at 1-0. He shook off his defender with a burst of speed and redirected the low pass into the net from the top of the six-yard box. “Life writes the most beautiful stories. Maxi Beier isn’t with the national team, but today he was the one who scored,” said BVB Head Coach Niko Kovac. Having played in the World Cup, Beier did not receive a call-up from Germany Head Coach Jürgen Klopp for the October fixtures.

In the marquee clash of the matchday, which saw last season’s fourth-place finisher take on the second-place finisher in Borussia Dortmund, Maxi Beier and Serhou Guirassy jointly ranked first among all players in shots taken (3 each). Beier also recorded the most sprints (24), reaching a personal top speed of 35.6 km/h (roughly 22.1 mph).

Maxi Beier has already recorded three goal contributions this Bundesliga season, with that total including one assist each against Hamburg and Paderborn. Thus far, he has collected twelve points (goals plus assists) in 2026. Niko Kovac praised the Germany international's versatility, saying, “Maxi can play anywhere — be it at left back, right back, left forward, or right forward."

Beier came close to bagging a brace in the match. In the fourth minute, he headed a cross Julian Ryerson cross well wide of the goal. “It was a great cross," said the third-year BVB attacker, who had taken a bump from Stuttgart's Jeff Chabot right before the ball reached him. "To be honest, I really should have put that away, or at least hit the target.." Borussia's Kovac acknowlged the impact of Chabot's veteran play. "That tiny bit of contact at the end was enough to throw him off balance and cause him to miss wide," explained the BVB Head Coach.
