BVB Women Consolidate Top Spot After Away Win

In Freudenberg, Sara Ito—who was rested last weekend—was back on the field from the start in the defensive midfield position. Alongside the 25-year-old, center back Melanie Schuster also returned to the starting lineup in place of Lara Schmidt. The offensive lineup remained unchanged from the previous week, featuring Ramona Maier, Rita Schumacher, Ronja Leubner, and Alex Popp. Marina Scholz was not yet included in the matchday roster due to adductor problems.
Match Summary
Even before kickoff, there was a lively atmosphere in the well-attended HF-Arena in Freudenberg. Facing a motivated home team, the BVB Women struggled in a hectic opening phase to find ways past the hosts’ deep-lying defense. Their initial attempts to find Ramona Maier or Ronja Leubner in the box failed to produce a goal in the first quarter-hour. In the 19th minute, it was finally Rita Schumacher who, on a follow-up shot, delicately curled the ball over the Freudenberg defense to give her team a 1–0 lead.
The center backs, Schuster and Kempe, who had pushed high up the field, continuously distributed the ball to the wings. The ball moved from right to left to Rita Schumacher, who, in the 28th minute, delivered a precise cross to Alex Popp at the five-meter line. The BVB captain converted the assist with a header, with her back to the goal, to give the BVB Women a 2-0 lead. After the BVB women celebrated their captain’s first away goal in the Regionalliga West, the Black and Yellows scored their first free-kick goal of the current season just ten minutes later: From sixteen meters out, Schumacher once again fired a low shot into the right corner to give her team a 3–0 halftime lead (38th minute).
The second half began with drizzling rain and a huge chance for BVB: Less than ten seconds after the restart, Ramona Maier, having won the ball herself and finding herself one-on-one with goalkeeper Hannah Strunk, missed the chance to make it 4–0 early on. Defensively, the BVB Women remained solid against a deep-lying Freudenberg side in the second half as well. Up front, the Borussia women subsequently made fewer forays into the opponent’s box until Frederike Kempe celebrated her first goal of the season in the 78th minute. The center back confidently headed home a sharply taken corner from Schumacher to seal the 4–0 final score. The Dortmund women controlled the game throughout the 90 minutes and, following this away victory on Matchday 5, remain at the top of the Regionalliga West table with 15 points and a goal differential of 20–0.

On the next matchday, the BVB Women will host FSV Gütersloh at the Rote Erde Stadium. The match kicks off on Sunday (Sept. 27) at 3 p.m. Tickets (standing room: 3 euros, seated: 5 euros) are available online in the BVB ticket shop.
