BVB Women aim to extend their winning streak

The BVB Women recently played two consecutive away games, winning both in Duisburg (5–0) and Freudenberg (4–0) without conceding a single goal. Now the next challenge awaits at their home stadium, Rote Erde: On the sixth matchday of the Regionalliga West, the BVB women will face FSV Gütersloh (27 September, 3:00 p.m.). Coach Markus Högner approaches the former second-division club with respect and expects his team to remain focused throughout the entire 90 minutes.

The scenario

Thanks to a 4-0 away win at Fortuna Freudenberg, the Black and Yellows can continue to celebrate a perfect record in the Regionalliga West. With five wins in five games and a goal differential of 20-0, Markus Högner’s team sits atop the standings. The head coach puts it in perspective: “In retrospect, this is without a doubt an excellent start, but there are still areas with room for improvement. We need to gradually reduce the periods in the game where we play too erratically in the upcoming matches. This continuous development is and will remain our goal.”

Team News

Marina Scholz, who had to sit out recently due to adductor issues, has partially resumed training this week. The same goes for Emilia Pauls, who suffered a torn lateral ligament in her left ankle in April. “I expect both of them to be fully fit again in the near future,” said Markus Högner.

On Friday, Ann-Sophie Vogel also brought some positive news. The 28-year-old extended her contract with BVB ahead of schedule through 2029.

Opponent

After the first five matchdays, FSV Gütersloh finds itself in the middle of the Regionalliga West standings with six points. Most recently, the team coached by Britta Hainke suffered two 0–1 losses against DJK Wacker Mecklenbeck and MSV Duisburg. For Markus Högner, this is no reason to take the upcoming match lightly: “Despite being relegated from the 2. Bundesliga last year, FSV Gütersloh is traditionally known for its excellent youth development program. The team has a strong transition game, plays with a lot of passion, and will continue to improve as the season progresses.” There is, accordingly, great respect for this tactically well-drilled opponent. According to the BVB coach, the team must therefore approach the upcoming match against Gütersloh with patience in order to exploit open spaces at the right moments.

Gütersloh’s Past

No fewer than six players from the current BVB Women’s first team once laced up their cleats for the East Westphalian club—namely Melanie Schuster, Ronja Leubner, Frederike Kempe, Laura van der Laan, Noreen Günnewig, and Paula Reimann. “For the FSV officials, these direct transfers might still be an issue,” Markus Högner speculates. “The players on the field, on the other hand, certainly don’t need this extra motivation.”

The home game against FSV Gütersloh kicks off this coming Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets for the match at Rote Erde Stadium are available in the online ticket shop (seated: €5, standing: €3; children and teens up to and including age 17 get in free ).
