Karetsas Celebrates Greece’s Victory Over Germany

Konstantinos Karetsas achieved a major upset with the Greek national team in the UEFA Nations League, defeating the German national team on Sunday evening. In the 1-0 away win in Augsburg, the BVB pro played the entire match and was one of the most prominent players on the field. For the German national team, Felix Nmecha was in the starting lineup.

Konstantinos Karetsas already had several strong moments in the first half, repeatedly launching dangerous dribbles into the opponent’s third. The Borussia Dortmund forward also had a good scoring opportunity himself. However, his left-footed shot in the seventh minute sailed over the goal.

The 18-year-old, along with his Greek teammates, played as a well-organized unit overall. When Dimitrios Koubelis scored the decisive goal of the evening in the 74th minute, Karetsas was among the first to congratulate him, and together with his team, he wrote a small chapter in Greek soccer history: For the first time ever in its international match history, Greece managed to win a match against Germany.

In the unsuccessful home debut of new German national team coach Jürgen Klopp, BVB midfielder Felix Nmecha played a total of 82 minutes before being replaced by Anton Stach. His Dortmund teammate Nico Schlotterbeck was not included in the matchday roster against Greece, nor was Waldemar Anton. They could still see playing time this week against Serbia (1 October, 8:45 p.m.) or Greece (4 October, 8:45 p.m.).

No BVB Showdown in Oslo

Meanwhile, Fábio Silva also remained on the sidelines. In the Portuguese national team’s 2-1 away win against Norway, the BVB forward was not named to the 23-man matchday roster by national team coach Jorge Jesus. As a result, there was no direct matchup between Fábio Silva and his teammate Julian Ryerson. The 28-year-old is a regular at right back for the Scandinavians and made his 49th international appearance. Playing at home in Oslo, Norway initially fell behind but equalized through former Borussians player Erling Haaland to make it 1-1. Goncalo Ramos then scored the winning goal for Portugal shortly afterward.

Chukwuemeka Scores for Austria

On Sunday evening, Joey Veerman for the Netherlands and Carney Chukwuemeka for Austria also saw action in the Nations League. Veerman played in the central midfield position during the Elftal’s 2-1 away victory over Serbia and was the linchpin of the game under new national team coach Xavi. The 27-year-old recorded 135 touches and a 90 percent pass completion rate. Veerman also provided five key passes and won 67 percent of his duels.

Carney Chukwuemeka also had plenty of reason to celebrate with the Austrian national team. The 22-year-old came on as a substitute in the 58th minute of the home game against Kosovo and scored just three minutes later to make it 3-0 for the Austrian national team (final score 3-1). For Chukwuemeka, the goal marked his first competitive goal for Austria.
