BVB end season in fifth place

Mainz 05 celebrated a fully deserved victory over an altogether too passive BVB side thanks to a furious performance in the first half. In doing so, the Rhinehessians moved up and out of the relegation play-off spot. Here are the match facts.

Fifth place confirmed: For the first time in 09 years, BVB will not finish a season in the top four of the table.

Winless against Mainz: For the first time since the 2009/10 season, i.e. in 14 years, BVB failed to beat Mainz in a season (the reverse fixture ended 1-1).

A long time ago: Borussia Dortmund suffered their first defeat in Mainz since September 2014, when Jürgen Klopp was still in the dugout for BVB.

Biggest win: Mainz scored more than two goals against the Black & Yellows for the first time in their 36th Bundesliga match. Correspondingly, the 3-0 win was FSV's biggest ever over Borussia.

And the two youngsters, Luke Fahrenhorst and Fadi Zarqelain, earned Rios\u2019s trust again following their strong performance in the 1-1 draw in Bochum.<\/p>\n<h2>Match Summary<\/b><\/h2>\nThe 5,336 spectators at Rote Erde Stadium\u2014including 674 visiting fans\u2014created a special atmosphere for the first home game of the new season. Against this backdrop, Dortmund played more attractively than FC in the opening stages. Luke Fahrenhorst, in particular, proved to be a key asset in central midfield, repeatedly trying to spark the offense as a target man and playmaker.<\/p>\nHowever, it was a Cologne player who created the first dangerous opportunity\u2014albeit unintentionally. While building up play, FC goalkeeper Mikolai Marutzki played the ball straight to Tim Degener\u2019s feet, but his touch was too sloppy (10). In the ensuing play, BVB showed tenacity in one-on-one duels, won the ball back frequently, and repeatedly made an impact on offense. Seven minutes after the first chance, a murmur rippled through the stadium following a nice pass from Bennedikt Wüstenhagen, as Malik Hodroj, who had pushed forward, surprised Cologne\u2019s keeper with a shot from a tight angle.
