BVB women's handballers in action away to direct rivals
The Borussia Dortmund women's handballers embarked upon the journey home following the draw against SV Union Halle-Neustadt last weekend with mixed feelings. Their long winning streak of eight matches in a row had come to an end on the one hand, but the point had successfully qualified the team for the EHF European League on the other. That means that BVB will be represented in international competition for the fifth season in a row next term.
For Zoë Sprengers, who produced an outstanding performance on Saturday and successfully converted all 13 of her shots, the prevailing feeling is still frustration. "It was not enough. We made simple mistakes and conceded goals on the counter. Our defence didn't work throughout the match. Fortunately, Sarah Wachter really helped out us with some great saves," reflected the left winger.
But the Dutchwoman now wants to turn her full focus to the remaining matches of the season, starting with the clash with the Flames from Bensheim. "We showed at home that we can beat them," she said, recalling the strong performance at the end of February when BVB ran out 31-28 victors against Bensheim on home turf. Heike Ahlgrimm's team currently sit one point above BVB in second place in the table but have also played one game more.
Borussia occupy third position and must travel away to Bietigheim next week. "That will of course be very difficult. But then we simply have to win in Bensheim and against Buxtehude. It won't be easy to finish second," said Sprengers, the team's top scorer with an average of 3.7 goals per match.
