Borussia Dortmund agree contract extension with Jürgen Klopp until 2018

Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday extended the contracts of head coach Jürgen Klopp and his assistants Zeljko Buvac and Peter Krawietz until June 30, 2018. The respective contracts had previously been extended ini January 2012 to run until 2016. Klopp has held the position of head coach since July 2008 and will, at the end of the current season, equal Ottmar Hitzfeld´s record of six years in charge (1991 - 1997).

"As you shouldn´t seperate things that belong together, we have once again extended the contracts of our head coach and his team," re-iterated Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. "We´re still all somewhat in love with the club and the way things work round here," gushed Klopp. And Sporting Director Michael Zorc emphasised that "Jürgen stands for the further development of this team. He is the perfect coach for BVB."

Since becoming coach of Borussia Dortmund in 2008, Jürgen Klopp has overseen a breathtaking development on the pitch. The team has excelled thanks to a fast-paced brand of football full of passion, emotion and desire based on commitment and tactical discipline. Sixth-place in the first season was followed by a fifth-placed finish before the young BVB side containing several home-grown and local players went on to claim two German championships (2011 and 2012), the first "double" of league and cup in 2012 and even reached the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2013.

Jürgen Klopp has already achieved the highest average number of points of any coach in BVB history. In his 180 Bundesliga games in charge, Borussia Dortmund have racked up 363 points (an average of 2.02 per match). Klopp, who always emphasises that he fulfills his contracts, will have been at the helm for 10 years once his current deal expires in June 2018. Then, only six coaches in Bundesliga history will have enjoyed longer reigns at the same club.
