Saves by goalkeeper Alex Meyer and goals from both centre-backs Mats Hummels and Antonios Papadopoulos saw Borussia Dortmund beat third-tier Dynamo Dresden 2-0 (2-0) in front of an atmospheric crowd and make it two wins from two in pre-season.

Boris Rupert reporting from Dresden

Having completed another tough training session in Dortmund in the morning, the Black & Yellows – still without their internationals, who were undergoing their performance tests at the same time – flew to Dresden. 18 players missed the second friendly in total with Dahoud, Hummels, Wolf, Passlack and Moukoko the only established players available.

Dresden, who will start their season in only two weeks, applied pressure at the outset and created two dangerous opportunities in the opening stages. The first chance at the other end fell to Aning, whose attempt from distance did not pose any problems for keeper Müller (4). A short while later, Hummels narrowly missed the target with a header from an Aning corner (6). But then the captain found the net, Eberwein heading another Aning corner back across goal and Hummels heading the ball into the far corner to make it 1-0 (13).

The lead was almost cancelled out on several occasions in the period that followed. Both Borowski (15) and Kutschke (17) went through on Meyer's goal, but the BVB custodian made spectacular saves on both occasions. It was a strange opening phase, with both midfields losing control over the game for a 10-minute spell each. BVB, playing in a 4-1-4-1 formation, carved open another good chance of their own in the 14th minute, only for Moukoko to miss following a solo run. The game calmed down as it approached the 20-minute mark and shortly before the break, the numerous BVB fans among the 23,816-strong crowd had further cause for celebration as another Aning corner produced a goal. The home side were unable to clear the low cross. Aning regained the ball on the centre-left of the box and found Papadopoulos, who found the gap between several opponents and increased the lead to 2-0.

BVB emerged from the changing rooms having made three substitutions – Kamara, Fink and Pohlmann replaced Dahoud, Michel and Aning, with Moukoko slotting in behind Fink in the centre-forward role. The Black & Yellows continued to dominate, with Rothe denied by ex-Borusse and current Dresden keeper Drljaca, who made a save with his foot in the 52nd minute. Shortly afterwards, both Pohlmann and Fink were thwarted by Drljaca (57), as was Eberwein after being set up by Simic (70). Dynamo upped the ante in the closing stages but Meyer made another save from Knipping (84).

BVB: Meyer – Passlack (Semic, 66), Papadopoulos, Hummels (Collins, 66), Rothe (Bueno, 66) – Dahoud (Kamara, 46) – Wolf (Simic, 66), Eberwein (Ludwig, 83), Michel (Pohlmann, 46), Aning (Fink, 46) – Moukoko (Rijkhoff, 66)
Goals: 0-1 Hummels (13), 0-2 Papadopoulos (41)
