Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund have signed Dutch youth international Ian Maatsen (21). The left-back, who underwent the compulsory medical examination in Dortmund on Wednesday, joins on loan from Chelsea until the end of the current campaign.

The loan is still subject to processing in accordance with the association's regulations.

"Due to our current personnel situation, we have decided to further strengthen in the left-back position this winter. With his strengths, Ian fits our requirements. He's a player who brings a lot of pace, has a strong left foot and can also play in various positions. We're very pleased that we were able to complete this loan before our first Bundesliga match of the year," said BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

"Borussia Dortmund made a lot of effort to sign me. I've been following BVB and their fans for a long time and even went to the Champions League match in Manchester in the autumn of 2022 to see the team live on the pitch," said Ian Maatsen, who went on to add: "I'm very happy that the loan has now worked out. I promise that I'll give my all to help the team be successful and am really looking forward to the Yellow Wall."

Ian Maatsen was born near Rotterdam and came through the youth ranks at Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven. He joined the Chelsea U18s in 2018 and made it into the Blues' first-team squad in July of last year following various loan spells – including one at Burnley in 2022/23, where Maatsen notched four goals and six assists to help the club win the English Championship. He made his Premier League debut in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool on 13 August 2023. So far, Maatsen has made 12 appearances in England's top flight.
