Marco Reus has been named the new captain of Borussia Dortmund. Coach Lucien Favre confirmed the decision following the 1-1 (1-0) friendly draw with Rennes, for which the 29-year-old wore the armband as expected.

It was the first time Reus has featured for BVB since the World Cup. The playmaker takes over from Marcel Schmelzer, who withdrew from the captaincy in May after two seasons in the role. "Marco is a role model, he has lots of experience and has been at the club a long time. He's the logical choice," said Favre. Reus was delighted with the decision: "The coach announced today that I'm the new captain. That's obviously an honour and makes me proud."

The composition of the Team Council will remain open until competitive fixtures start. (br)
