Champions League participants Borussia Dortmund have agreed to the sale of Gonzalo Castro to fellow Bundesliga outfit VfB Stuttgart. The 31-year-old midfielder has terminated his contract with BVB and signed on with the Swabians until 2021.

Castro joined BVB from Bayer Leverkusen in summer 2015, making 72 Bundesliga appearances (six goals, 15 assists) for the Black & Yellows in his three seasons. He played for the club 21 times (two goals) across the two European competitions and scored four goals in 13 DFB Cup appearances.

BVB Sporting Director Michael Zorc said: "We thank Gonzalo Castro for his efforts in a BVB shirt and wish him nothing but the very best in Stuttgart in both his sporting and private life."

"After three wonderful years at BVB, I would like to thank the management for agreeing to my request for a premature departure. I would also like to thank the BVB fans for their support - the 2017 DFB Cup victory and the subsequent open-top bus parade in Dortmund will always remain unforgettable memories. Now I'm looking forward to VfB Stuttgart, where another important role lies in store for me."
