"I thought I would save the penalty..."
It wasn´t meant to happen as Seah Salihovic coolly converted his second penalty of the afternoon. Grosskreutz was left without a chance despite getting some "expert" advice. "My teammates offered some tips, and we all thought he would steer into the same corner. Unfortunately, he slammed it straight into the centre of the goal," said Grosskreutz.
With BVB having used all their substitutes, Grosskreutz had to go in goal after Roman Weidenfeller was shown a very controversial red card. It was a foul by Weidenfeller, not doubt about it, but when goalkeepers commit fouls like this they are usually, unlike outfield players, not hit with a "double" punishment (of a red card and a penalty). Weidenfeller, who got his first and so far only red card in a cup tie against Hannover for handling the ball outside the area, is now facing a suspension that is set to run into next season, though it will only be for domestic games.
For Grosskreutz, there was almost a happy ending to the game. Cheered on by the crowd, he moved up the field to join the attack, and BVB actually managed to find the net again - or so everybody thought. "It was a great feeling to be urged forward by the whole stadium. We even made the second goal and the assistant also didn´t raise his flag. It´s just a shame that the goal was not allowed as we would have deserved it," said Grosskreutz.
However, be that as it may, for the table and the season in general the result did not have any significance. After all, there´s a much more important game coming up. Grosskreutz said: "It was a great season, and on Saturday in London we will give our all!"
