Borussia Dortmund lost 3-1 (2-0) to Feyenoord in their second game of the Traditions Cup. Lucien Favre's side will take many lessons from the defeat. Ansgar Knauff impressed once again.

In a repeat of the 2002 UEFA Cup final, Jörgensen (2) and Botteghin got the goals for Feyenoord, with Witsel on target for BVB. The match was played in a shortened 2 x 30 minutes form.

The two sides cancelled each other out in the first 15 minutes of play. Both teams fought with determination to win the ball and create space. It was the Dutch side that struck first in the 17th minute: a swift counter-attack sent Jörgensen through on goal. The Dane kept his cool to slot the ball past Bürki and make it 1-0.

The 15-time Dutch title winners - placed 3rd in the table before the cancellation of the season in March - were in the driving seat, but BVB had a chance to strike back in the 22nd minute: Brandt played a free-kick delivery towards the head of Can, who failed to make the right connection and sent the ball over the bar. Down the other end, Feyenoord scored from a corner to double their advantage. Botteghin found himself in acres of space and finished with aplomb.

During the break, Favre made a tactical adjustment to his 4-2-3-1 formation: Passlack moved from right-back to left-back, Wolf dropped back to cover the right side of defence and Guerreiro slotted in to join Witsel at the base of midfield. However, the change in shape wasn't enough to prevent the Dutch side grabbing a 3-0 lead. Can was caught in possession close to his own box, and Feyenoord struck quickly to finish off the opportunity: Jörgensen once again left Bürki with no chance.

Overall, the Black & Yellows lacked urgency in their play. Going into the closing stages of the match, Feyenoord seemed the more likely of the two sides to score the next goal. However, in the 52nd minute, Witsel got on the end of a Knauff delivery to poke the ball into the back of the net. Knauff then came close to pulling BVB back to within a goal: his 56th minute effort from 15 metres out flew just wide of the mark, and then, two minutes later, he was denied by the keeper from close range. In injury time, a Haaland penalty (awarded after a foul on Passlack) was saved by the Rotterdam goalkeeper.

The Black & Yellows are next in action on Friday, with friendly matches against SC Paderborn and VfL Bochum being held at the club's training complex in Brackel. Both matches will last 90 minutes.
