Facts: Previously only two (cup) clashes with Kiel – 9-0 goals

Borussia Dortmund will be away to Holstein Kiel on Tuesday (kick-off at 18:30 CET, live on Sky). It will be the first Bundesliga meeting between the clubs. The facts preview.

The scenario: The teams are in 17th and eighth places respectively. Kiel are five points behind the relegation play-off place, which is exactly the same gap between BVB and a Champions League berth. It will be the first Bundesliga meeting between the two clubs.

Home/away: Holstein are the only Bundesliga club that has not yet drawn a match at home. However, the newcomers have also played only eight home games in the top flight. There have so far been two home wins (against Heidenheim and Augsburg) and six defeats. BVB celebrated their first away victory (3-1 in Wolfsburg) shortly before Christmas and only occupy 13th position in the away table (one victory, two draws and four defeats).

Head-to-head record: Both clubs have previously only met in the DFB-Pokal, with BVB winning clearly on both occasions. The Black & Yellows won 4-0 away in the quarter-finals in 2011/12 (goals: Lewandowski, Kagawa, Barrios, Perisic) and claimed an even clearer 5-0 home victory in the semi-finals nine years later (Reyna x 2, Reus, Hazard, Bellingham). The final score was already confirmed four minutes before the half-time interval.

Statistics: Holstein Kiel have already conceded more goals after 16 matchdays (41) than in the entirety of their promotion-winning season (39). The conceded goals have been spread almost equally across their home games (20) and away games (21). The Storks have kept only one clean sheet to date (in the 1-0 home win against Heidenheim on Matchday 9). After a one-two with Guirassy, Chukwuemeka took aim from an acute angle, but his shot hit the side netting in the 21st minute. Shortly afterwards, Can earned the chance to open the scoring as a result of some high pressing, which caused Freiburg to lose the ball in their half, but his shot from 17 metres was not accurate or powerful enough on 24 minutes. After exactly half an hour, the Black & Yellows were rewarded for their courageous performance: Couto struck a free kick from the right side into the box, Bensebaini chested the ball down and prodded it over the line to make it 1-0 in the 31st minute. After a risky pass from Kobel, the Englishman tried to put his body in the way 19 metres out in front of his own goal, but caught Treu, who was bursting forward at pace, and was given his marching orders by referee Zwayer for preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity. It was Bellingham\u2019s first foul in the game. Günter fired the resulting free kick just past the left-hand post.<\/p>\nBVB responded to going a man down by bringing on Pascal Groß for Fabio Silva, and had hardly any extended periods of possession thereafter. The match took place almost entirely in the Dortmund half. Kobel brilliantly tipped a follow-up shot from Treu around the post in the 69th minute, and also showed strong reactions to save Suzuki\u2019s shot, which had taken a wicked deflection off Bensebaini, in the 74th minute. But 60 seconds later, Freiburg were celebrating the equaliser Höler did well to get on the end of Günter\u2019s cross and finished brilliantly, finding the far post.
